At least Zip's got gas so she has hot water and can cook on her stovetop. A kerosene heater is all she's got to keep warm as long as the kerosene holds out. There are power outages all over so it could be days before electricity is restored.

I am in Colorado and it's been really warm for us too. I think that's why we've had all the snow. When it's zero to 10 below for eight to ten weeks the air dry and it never snows. That's the way it used to be here. What we've been getting for the past two years is 40 degree weather with short cold snaps that last for a day or two. Snows like hell when the cold hits the warm moist air.

We're getting something I have rarely seen...heavy snow with REALLY cold weather mixed in. Usually, it's relatively warm when it snows, in the 20s. Now we're getting heavy snow and wind combined with temps in the single digits. Not a nice combo. It's still snowing lightly here, but the temp is about 8 degrees.
Those cheap fares to Mexico are quite tempting.
Everyone here dreams of going to Hawaii. I spent a lot of time in California where everyone thinks Hawaii sucks. So it's weird to hear these people go on. All the young women I interact with here plan to move to Hawaii as soon as they finish blah, blah blah.

The model says that the northern north American shield is supposed to get more like Siberia. Blazing hot in the summer with short, very frigid cold snaps in the winter as severe artic storms come through. The east coast temperature is supposed to drop over the next few years until the climate is like the UK. The UK will become more like Norway.

poor Zip - I hope she's doing ok. ice is nasty, not much you can do but stay indoors until it melts. I don't miss living in the north in the winter (and when I say north I only mean D.C. - that's how much I don't like cold and ice and snow). today in Alabama we had flurries - I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! but it didn't amount to anything at all. I hope Zip has lots of wine and scented candles and just enjoys this break from technology and the modern world. on the plus side, she'll miss the news for a couple of days :)

Back to basics. Gotta keep water handy. Zip will be fine - she is a straight thinking women.
We got dumped on pretty good here in Ft. Wayne starting early Tues. AM & ending Wed. about 4 AM. The blizzard warning expired 7 AM Wed. For a while, I guess we were under a level 3 snow emergency. (Basiclly martial law, only government employees are allowed out, everyone else is subject to arrest and vehicle seizure.) All manufacturing was shut down starting with the 2nd shift Tues. and not resuming until at least 2nd shift Wed. A lot of them remained closed until this morning. (You know it's bad when the companies give up a whole day of their precious profits.) I don't know how much snow we really got, but I'd guess about a foot, but it was a really dense, heavy, granular snow, kind of like sand. The temps here have been just brutally cold for about three weeks now, dipping well below zero almost every day. Thankfully, yesterday the winds died down and the temp rose to a blistering 20 degrees with sunny skies, making the Herculean task of digging out not quite so dangerous. The snow was driven by really high winds. Depending on where you were standing, there could be no snow, or as much as 4 feet. The average on my property was about 16 inches. My 19 year-old snow thrower really earned it's keep this year. I can't tell you how glad I am that I took the time to tweak that thing up this fall, otherwise I'd probably be stuck inside the fence until Spring.

I spoke with Zip on the phone last night. The electric company had been by earlier in the day, but weren't able to restore their power. She was miserable..very cold.
Yes, we enjoyed it very much. The was also very enlightening. I found that I could barely order a cup of coffee at Hartsfield without speaking Indian or Pakistani, nor was it all that easy to order lunch at Wall Drug where most of the employees were East European "students". Wall Drug, out in the middle on nowhere, importing cheap labor by the plane load. Who could ever imagine. Richard W.
The wifey was like a caged wild animal. Not being able to jump in her car and do as she pleases for two whole days really unhinged her. She's gonna have a hard time adjusting to life in a Freedom & Liberty Camp when the day comes.
It seems the phone lines are always the last to go. Whatever the phone companies are doing to protect their lines the electric companies should copy if possible.
God is always good! i just called her and her power was restored in the middle of the night. she's back at work today.
Thank GOD and the power company I now have HEAT!! There are still 30,000 businesses and homes in my area that are still w/o power! Thankfully I'm not one of them :P

And I just lost it for the 2nd time today. No help until tomorrow. I'm using the Brooklyn tenement trick; turn on the stove tops and oven (they're electric, my heat is gas) and bundle up. An evening in the Holiday Inn is a distinct possibility.

You and Zipdoodle have my sympathy. One good thing about living with GM, Hercules, CIBA, Dupont, MBNA and other corporate sites all around is, power is restored quickly here. If I lived below the C&D canal I could be out for days as they hustle to restore power here in money country. G_d forbid the smokestacks stop belching acid or banksters stop processing credit cards. "You have tampered with the forces of nature, Mr. Beale!" Imagine if The Dupont Experimental Station was impeded in their research for the latest pesticide.
Spring is just around the corner. Not that I would know, we don't really have 4 seasons (except for a hotel by that name).

Not much spring for the rest of the week thru the weekend.. very cold.. and more snow.. but next week it's supposed to be unseasonably warm .. go figure.. Its very beautiful though.. the trees are crystal.. encapsulated in thick ice.. when the sun hits them they sparkle..
I've seen photos of ice storms, but I'm sure it must be spectacular in real life.

Oh it truly is.. I was out last evening and on the way home there were trees that were lit by spotlights.. it was absolutely beautiful.. This is how they look but this photo doesnt reveal how pretty it is..of course it's very damaging to the trees..

The streets are clear..they did a good job in clearing the roadways considering and the trees are covered in ice.. very pretty.. but I have a large maple about 40 ft high.. it's losing a lot of large branches from the weight of the ice.. there is a woods behind me and last night you could hear the sound of cracking and falling branches and trees.. What caused our power outage was the amount of ice on the powerline.. my next door neighor had told me it was caused by a tree that had fallen on the line but it was from ice on the line.
It just fired up. We should be good for the night. The worst it can get to in here is the mid 50s, which is quite survivable. Snuggle weather, and all that.
What a mess. That is how our winter started here, tho with a heavy snow that caused massive tree damage. We still have branches in the BY that need to be cleaned up from months ago. It's just been to nasty to get out and do the job. Never had a winter this long and determined as this one. Today we had a huge grader, front end loader and dump truck work all afternoon in the neighborhood scraping ice off the drainways in the roads. Massive road damage here in Co Springs.
Oh geeze............Walls is just about the most famous place in nowheresville, USA! Really a remarkable sort of place. When I did my grand tour back to Ohio, my friends were all telling me I just had to stop there. Seeing as how I was planning to see Mt. Rushmore, it would be a natural to hit Rapid City, then Walls, and then drop down into the Badlands. Now that is the weirdest landscape. I half expected a bunch of Indians or outlaws on horses to come riding right out of the canyon/cliff walls. Never got to see the buffalo roam, tho. :(
