WASHINGTON — The Bush administration plans to allow about 7,000 Iraqi refugees to settle in the United States over the next year, a huge expansion at a time of mounting international pressure to help those who have fled in the nearly four-year-old war.

The United States has allowed only 463 Iraq refugees into the country since the war began, even though some 3.8 million have left. A senior State Department official described the expanded program on condition of anonymity ahead of a formal announcement later Wednesday.

The administration also plans to pledge $18 million for a worldwide resettlement and relief program. The United Nations has asked for $60 million from nations around the world.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met Wednesday with U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres to outline the expanded U.S. program. The 7,000 would be resettled from nations outside Iraq where they have fled. The U.S. proposal also includes plans to offer special treatment for Iraqis still in the country whose cooperation with the U.S. government puts them at risk from sectarian reprisal.

Most refugees have fled to Syria and Jordan, both of which have recently tried to restrict the influx. The U.N. estimates that 40,000 to 50,000 people flee Iraq each month and have dwindling options of where to go.

U.S. diplomats have discussed the situation directly with the Syrian government, the State Department official said. That is notable because of the administration’s reluctance to engage Syria in high-level discussions about security in Iraq. The U.S. has also discussed the refugee problem with Jordan, a close ally, then official said.

Oh goodie. 7000 more people who won't be paying taxes for 7 years. Another 7000 people who will be on the public dole. Another 7000 people who will be eligible for all kinds of aid that the average citizen won't be able to get. Another 7000 potential terrorists. Another 7000 people who will bring their families, which will bring that number close to 56,000.

This country's priorities are all fucked up.

Seven thousand people just this year.

And once our helicopters are lifting off the roof top of our grotesque embassy in Baghdad - and we know that day will surely come within the next 5 years - we will be COMPELLED by UN treaties to take in all the hundreds of thousands of the "Iraqi refugees" who "collaberated/helped/co-operated" with our military (ie. police, merchants, politicians, whomever). It will be like Vietnam all over again.

It's like what Colin Powell said - we broke Iraq, so now we "own" the mess and all the tiny pieces we caused to break.

I heard Tucker Carlson - what a boobhead - ranting last week about the fact that the US gov't was being pressured by the UN and other humanitarian groups to taken in the Iraqi displaced refugees. Tucker was outraged! He said - "why aren't the Arab countries or EU countries taking in these Iraqi refugees? How come it's always the US's "problem? We removed Saddam and it's the least other countries could do is take in these Iraqis since we have done such a wonderful thing by invading and occupying Iraq and bringing them democracy. And besides which who knows how many Iraqis are terrrorist types and would cause our nation harm after they get here because they'd resent that we needed to bomb a few places in Iraq to free them."

HAHAHAHA - I couldn't believe my ears. Carlson is so much over his head - I don't even think it's because he's a neocon idealogue - I think it's because he is not a very bright person - he can't think beyond his script.

The guy he was interviewing mumbled something in response about Iraqi refugees being the US problem because we invaded a stable country and caused chaos and displacement.
