'Wash Times' Fails to Correct Fabricated Abraham Lincoln Quote -- Now a Congressman is Using It

By E&P Staff

Published: February 15, 2007 10:00 PM ET

NEW YORK More than two days after an inflammatory quote used by a regular Washington Times columnist was shown to be fabricated -- it was attributed to Abraham Lincoln, no less -- the newspaper still has not removed it from the article, nor carried a correction.

That's one reason Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) cited the quote on the floor of the House on Thursday in the debate over the Iraq war "surge." He took it to be true, apparently. Rep. Young added, referring to Lincoln: "He had the same problem this President has, with an unpopular war. The same problem with people trying to redirect the commander in chief."

Young's spokeswoman, Meredith Kenny, said the congressman took the quote directly from The Washington Times column. "Now that he's been informed these are not the actual words of Lincoln, he will discontinue attributing the words to Lincoln. However, he continues to totally agree with the message of the statement," Kenny told The Washington Post.

On Wednesday, E&P and some political blogs pointed out that conservative Frank Gaffney, Jr., opened his latest column on Tuesday morning with this: "Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled, or hanged." — President Abraham Lincoln.

He continued: "It is, of course, unimaginable that the penalties proposed by one of our most admired presidents for the crime of dividing America in the face of the enemy would be contemplated — let alone applied — today. Still, as the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate engage in interminable debate about resolutions whose effects can only be to 'damage morale and undermine the military' while emboldening our enemies, it is time to reflect on what constitutes inappropriate behavior in time of war."

One problem: Lincoln never said it. But that hasn't stopped the newspaper, and Gaffney, from refusing to correct the record -- as of Friday morning -- or remove the quote from the top of his column.

Brooks Jackson at http://FactCheck.org, the Annenberg Public Policy Center group, had studied the sudden appearance of the quote last August. Why? He had found that his Web search "brought up more than 18,000 references to it."

He reported: "Supporters of President Bush and the war in Iraq often quote Abraham Lincoln as saying members of Congress who act to damage military morale in wartime 'are saboteurs, and should be arrested, exiled or hanged.'

"Republican candidate Diana Irey used the 'quote' recently in her campaign against Democratic Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, and it has appeared thousands of times on the Internet, in newspaper articles and letters to the editor, and in Republican speeches.

"But Lincoln never said that. The conservative author who touched off the misquotation frenzy, J. Michael Waller, concedes that the words are his, not Lincoln's. Waller says he never meant to put quote marks around them, and blames an editor [at the magazine Insight] for the mistake and the failure to correct it. We also note other serious historical errors in the Waller article containing the bogus quote."

Jackson later provided this update: "Candidate Irey retracted the quote and apologized hours after this article appeared."

Waller wrote to Jackson concerning the 2003 article: "Oddly, you are the first to question me about this. I'm surprised it has been repeated as often as you say. My editors at the time didn't think it was necessary to run a correction in the following issue of the magazine, and to my knowledge we received no public comment."

The right wingnuts believe anything that supports their fear, hate and warmonering agenda. Just have the media put it out there and it will be accepted as true without question.

Does E&P really consider the Moonie Times to be a real paper anyway? Not many people do. Hell- think of all the WMD and "AQ loves Saddam" stories they published that were all lies- that they have never bothered to retract. Fox News too. Newsmax- Worldnetdaily- all these third and second tier reichwinger propaganda orgs have REEMS of stories that were false or lies- that they never bothered to retract. Hell- the UK telegraph published a flat out lie about Austrian sniper rifles sold to Iran being found in Iraq the other day. They won't ever retract that. The goal of these propaganda fronts for the MIC (ultimatley that is where all these "Conservative" media outlets get their dough) is simply to spread disinfo among their stupid BOT drones- who then complain that the lies they read in their reichwinger trash press are not repeated in the MSM because of "liberal bias". Nope- its because the stuff the reichwinger media routinely publishes is straight up 100 percent garbage and fantasy that our more cautious MSM won't touch.

Other things Lincoln didn’t say

“If your laws don’t allow torture, ship a potential enemy of the state somewhere that does.”

_________

“Wow, my wife, nuts, eh? What are you going to do?”
_________

“The best thing a friend can do for a friend is help him make money. And Presidents have lots of friends.”

_________

“Making up facts to back up a pre-emptive war against a sovereign nation is super-fantastic.”
_________

“Beyonce? Seriously, I’d tap that.”

_________

“The Louisiana Purchase was such a waste of time and money. Screw the French. I say if that area gets hit with a natural disaster, we let the bastards drown.”
_________

“Only by taking a big crap on the Constitution will we be able to live as free Americans.”

August 2006:

In Pennsylvania recently, Dana Irey, the Republican candidate running against incumbent Democratic Rep. John Murtha - a vocal critic of the Iraq war — came up with this gem at a rally:

Our 16th President (Lincoln), and I quote: ‘Congressmen who willfully take action during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs, and should be arrested, exiled or hanged.’
Of course, Lincoln never said that.
The fake quote was exposed by the Abraham Lincoln Association in the fall of 2005.

conconservative.blogspot.com used it Nov 2005.

So did Horowitz's frontpagemag. It appeared even earlier there as a comment in frontpagemag on June 2 2004.

Kudlow's money politics used it Dec 2005.

There is however a little more than a kernel of truth in the alleged quote.

"Must I," Lincoln lamented, "shoot a simple-minded soldier boy who deserts, while I must not touch a hair of a wiley agitator who induces him to desert?... I think that in such a case, to silence the agitator, and save the boy, is not only constitutional, but, withal, a great mercy."

The agitator in question being a former Congressman. Lincoln had him arrested and turned over to Confederate authorities -- who in turn exiled him to Canada.

His big sin: "Vallandigham strayed beyond the realm of reality and suggested that the Republicans only wanted to end slavery to further their quest for a dictatorship."

Everything is inverted. Bush's dictatorial spirit is consistent with Lincoln, far more so than Bush's "diversity" pandering is.

We can assume no word will be forthcoming on Obama's misuse of Lincoln.

"In popular articles that play down the genetical differences among human populations, it is often stated that about 85% of the total genetic variation is due to individual differences within populations and only 15% to differences between populations or ethnic groups. ...this argument ignores the fact that most of the information that distinguishes populations is hidden in the correlation structure of the data and not simply in the variation of the individual factors." In other words, this is a deceitful argument, and those who make it know that.
