New film documents discovery of Jerusalem cave containing ten caskets believed to hold remains of Jesus, Mary, Mary Magdalene and others

The cave in which Jesus Christ was buried has been found in Jerusalem, claim the makers of a new documentary film.

If it proves true, the discovery, which will be revealed at a press conference in New York Monday, could shake up the Christian world as one of the most significant archeological finds in history.

The coffins which, according to the filmmakers held the remains of Jesus of Nazareth, his mother Mary and Mary Magdalene will be displayed for the first timeon Monday in New York.

Jointly produced by Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici and Oscar winning director James Cameron, the film tells the exciting and tortuous story of the archeological discovery.

The story starts in 1980 in Jerusalem’s Talpiyot neighborhood, with the discovery of a 2,000 year old cave containing ten coffins. Six of the ten coffins were carved with inscriptions reading the names: Jesua son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Matthew, Jofa (Joseph, identified as Jesus’ brother), Judah son of Jesua (Jesus’ son - the filmmakers claim).

Decades of research

The findings in the cave, including the decipherment of the inscriptions, were first revealed about ten years ago by internationally renowned Israeli archeologist Professor Amos Kloner.

Since their discovery, the caskets were kept in the Israeli Antiquities Authority archive in Beit Shemesh, but now two have been sent to New York for their first public exhibition.

Although the cave was discovered nearly 30 years ago and the casket inscriptions decoded ten years ago, the filmmakers are the first to establish that the cave was in fact the burial site of Jesus and his family.

The findings challenge the traditional Christian belief that Jesus was resurrected three days after his burial and only later rose to heaven.

The film, which documents the stages of the discovery, is the result of three years labor and research. It will be broadcast on the international Discovery Channel, Britain's Channel 4, Canada’s Vision and Israel’s Channel 8, which also took part in the film's production.

According to the filmmakers, the film’s claim is based on close work with world-famous scientists, archeologists, statisticians, DNA specialists and antiquities experts.

Yeah and a hundred years ago they found His tomb in Kashmir. At least that Jesus showed evidence of a crucifixtion. Notice they say nothing about whether or not the Jesus they found showed any indication of crucifixtion. While there is debate on where Mary the Mother of Jesus and Mary Magdelene died (either Jerusalem or Ephesis), it is pretty much settled that Matthew died in Ethiopia. The only debate about Matthew seems to be whether or not he died a martyr or lived to an old age. Also, why would Joseph be buried in Jerusalem instead of Bethlehem or Nazareth?

People can believe what they want to believe, however, I do not believe for a minute that the apostles gave up everything they had and left everyone they knew to travel around the known world to preach a false gospel and then willingly gave up their lives as martyrs. Paul describes the hardships he endured and yet he continued on preaching and writing. There is no reason to believe that the other apostles fared any better, and in fact, if you believe the writings of the early church all but John died as martyrs. And there is more than just the writings of the early church. Josephus writes of the martyrdom of James. Josephus was a Jew not a Christian. He had no need to propagate a lie, if a lie it was. So if the events surrounding Jesus were not true, why would James give up his life for it?

New scholarship has found that Peter was not a poor fisherman but instead was most likely a successful businessman. Yet he gave all of this up so that he could travel the world spreading a lie? And gave his life for this lie?

In my humble opinion, what we have here is an onging 2000 year old Jewish attempt to discredit Christianity.

Before making such a find public, they had to first ask "Will this story be good for the Jews?"

HF: I concur. More Jewish attempts to discredit Christianity. Perhaps it's the only way they can shake their guilt.

"Will this story be good for the Jews?"

Probably so...the film less about Christianity than it is about Judaism. One director's a Zionist, the other's a 33rd degree Mason (Judaism for the goyim).

“Yes, but is this good for Jews?"

Note that it is not being broadcast in the U.S. The denizens of the South, in particular, would not have appreciably any more tolerance for such a claim than did the Muslims who went on the cartoon rampage.

ROTFL...

Great way to start the weekend off.

Does it not seem logical that the Sadduccees, who did NOT believe in resurrection, as well as the Pharisee leaders who wanted Jesus dead because of what they considered blaspheme, would have been more than eager to keep tabs on that tomb so that they could 'show the world' what a liar He was--that he was just flesh and bones like them?

Instead of being able to 'prove' the rightness of their actions, it is logical in that there was no body there, they'd want to quietly forget its location, and hope the public would remain unaware. There is no way these upright men wanted their reputations sullied; they would have been all for showing the rotting body to anyone and everyone.

Instead, they leave it to some modern day <2000 years later> film maker to repair their reputations.

Oh........did I mention that I have a bridge......for a very reasonable price......

I'm with you.

It's my understanding that in Jerusalem, where James was head of the church, that for many years, the other church leaders/members didn't know where he stood; it was only when they found out they killed him.

And as for the apostles going out into the world--they didn't have the communication systems available today. Given the choice of 'confessing the truth' or beiing killed, how easy it would have been for them individually to say, "I was just kidding" or "I was mistaken", then pick up their marbles, so to speak, and get out of town. Their friends back in Jerusalem would never know. Eventually if he went back there, he could tell them all sorts of bullcrappy stuff. Instead, virtually every one went to a martyrs death.

Okay, if they found the body, that means that "Christianity" is a false religion and we (Christians) all become Jews, by default - right?

Jesus preached Judaism; we're already there, with the "Old Testament," right?

Did I get that straight?

I'll never understand how the "christianists" [faux christians] can actually believe the things they do. I can only attribute their zionism "Jews are chosen people" schtik to total ignorance of the Bible...and false money hungry faux preachers like Swaggert, Robertson, et al ad nauseum and their Illuminati masonic masters.

I repeat, this is merely a Jewish "hit" article trashing Christians.

Mysterious bones of Jesus, Joseph and Mary

By Tim Butcher in Jerusalem Last Updated: 1:34am GMT 24/02/2007

In a scene worthy of a Dan Brown novel, archaeologists a quarter of a century ago unearthed a burial chamber near Jerusalem.

Inside they found ossuaries, or boxes of bones, marked with the names of Jesus, Joseph and Mary.

Then one of the ossuaries went missing. The human remains inside were destroyed before any DNA testing could be carried out. advertisement

While Middle East academics doubt that the relics belong to the Holy Family, the issue is about to be exposed to a blaze of publicity with the publication next week of a book.

Entitled The Jesus Tomb and co-written by Simcha Jacobovici and Charles Pellegrino, the book promises the inside story of "what may very well be the greatest archaeological find of all time".

Some of the ossuaries will be at the book launch in New York, released by the Israel Antiquities Authority.

The story began in March 1980 when Yosef Gat, an archaeologist employed by the IAA, surveyed a burial chamber on the south-eastern approaches of Jerusalem.

The area was being developed into the latest suburb of the city, East Talpiot, and bulldozers had uncovered an archaeological site.

Mr Gat found a standard-looking Jewish tomb dating from the era of King Herod, the Jewish king known for his ambitious building works and for his murder of infants at the time of the birth of Jesus.

After crawling into the necropolis Mr Gat found the main chamber had been silted up with soil and debris, with six "kokhim", coffin shaped spaces leading off the main chamber where human remains were housed.

According to Jewish rites, bodies would be left for a year or so to decompose in the "kokhim" before relatives came back to gather the bones and store them in ossuaries.

Mr Gat found 10 ossuaries bearing inscriptions. Some were in ancient Greek and some were in Hebrew.

One inscription said "Jesus, son of Joseph", another said "Mara", a common form of Mary, and another said "Yose", a common form of Joseph.

The authors were unavailable for comment yesterday but it is understood they base their claim that the burial chamber contained the remains of the Holy Family on their own study carried out inside the structure.

The chamber has been closed for years because a building was constructed on top of it but the authors got permission to break through an apartment block floor.

They claim to have found human material on which they performed DNA testing in a New York laboratory.

"Tests prove the names are genetically of the same family and statistically, there is a one in 10 million chance this is a family other than the Holy Family," the pre-publication publicity for the book said.

However, according to strict Christian teaching, Jesus ascended to heaven, so there would be no bones left behind.

Mr Gat died several years ago. His boss, Prof Amos Kloner said that while the names together had "a certain power" they are standard.

"At least three other ossuaries have been found inscribed with the name Jesus and countless others with Joseph and Mary," he said.

The 10 ossuaries were taken initially to the Rockefeller Archaeological Museum outside the Old City of Jerusalem. Nine were catalogued and stored but the tenth was left outside in a courtyard.

That ossuary has subsequently gone missing.

The story went cold until two accounts of the discovery were published by Israeli academics in the mid 1990s. Prof Kloner wrote the second one in the IAA's in-house magazine Atiquot in 1996.

It sparked publicity, most notably a BBC programme shown that Easter produced by Ray Bruce called The Body In Question. However, Prof Kloner said there was no way the tomb housed the Holy Family.

"It is just not possible that a family who came from Galilee, as the New Testament tells us of Joseph and Mary, would be buried over several generations in Jerusalem."

However, in this Dan Brown era, we can't help wondering.

“Yes, but is this good for Jews?"
