Cheney's plane experiences mechanical problems February 25, 2007 01:30pm
US Vice President Dick Cheney's plane, Air Force Two, is reported to have experienced mechanical problems, forcing it to land in Singapore.
Prime Minister John Howard said from Sydney that he had heard reports the plane was being diverted, but had few details.
"I have had a report to that effect," Mr Howard said at a NSW Liberal Party campaign event.
"I'm not aware of the full circumstances.
"I have not been told except that it has been diverted.
"As to the precise circumstances, I am not as advised."
Mr Cheney's Boeing 757 was delayed temporarily at Sydney Airport this morning for an unknown reason.
As it stood still, revving its engines to make its initial advance towards the runway, it suddenly powered down.
The main door opened and the mobile stairwell then immediately returned to the plane, but it was waved off by security personnel.
The plane then proceeded to the runway and took off, en route to the United States.
The US Consulate in Sydney said the vice-president's plane had been scheduled to make a fuel stop in Singapore and a spokeswoman could not confirm if the plane was experiencing mechanical problems.
She said any information on the flight would come directly from the White House, but it is unknown if a statement will be released confirming or denying the reports.
Mr Cheney's plane was due to depart on schedule from Singapore, she said.
