Take a picture in Miami, go to jail

Miami police didn't want a photojournalist named Carlos Miller taking pictures of them, so they arrested him.

200702281859 Miller said that in the next instant, he was surrounded by the officers. One attempted to trip kick him to fall to the ground, but he was concerned about his expensive camera equipment, so he tried not to fall on his face. He heard one officer say “He’s resisting arrest!”

Miller tried to explain he wasn’t, but he’d lost his negotiating leverage a few minutes back. He went down hard on one knee. The officers planted (Miller said slammed) his face into the concrete and twisted his wrists and arms behind him to the point of pain.

“They were treating me like I was uncontrollable, a meth addict or something,” he said. “I tried to explain, but one of them said, ‘If you don’t shut up, I’m going to tase you.’”

Miller, at last, shut up.

I operate on the assumption all police are stupid thugs. So, I wouldn't use a flash at night, as this photographer did, to draw attention to himself.

A safe assumption. Once they see you are complient you can measure them for what they are. And then you can start to be in somewhat control, or at least nor percieved as "the bad guys".

WTF is the infraction? Major cities like Miami have surveillance cameras all over the place. We're basically strip searched when we go to the airport, but a cop can't be exposed to the same level of scrutiny? This is pure bat guano.

It's for the future bad cop / bad cop teams.

I have a friend who is a contractor. he was hired by a landlord to change the locks on a house where the tenants had moved out. while he was working on the front door, two police cars pulled up in front. he was curious and stepped out on the porch to see what was going on. the next thing he knew, they pulled him off the porch, threw him on the ground, handcuffed him, pointed their guns at him and one planted his foot on his neck. he kept asking them to call the owner of the house and they told him to "shut up"

a third cop arrived (I guess you need back-up when you have a 60 year old man handcuffed on the ground). coincidentally, my friend had been working at a house a week or so before which, when he arrived in the morning to work, had obviously been vandalized. he reported it to the police and this third cop was the one who had taken the report. he remembered him, and told the other two to let him up. he asked them why they didn't just question him, and they said he came out of the house wielding a drill. duh - he was changing a lock.

apparently a neighbor had seen him and called the police. I thought he should complain but he doesn't want trouble with the cops.

Cops are thugs. They join up to put the beat down on people and enjoy their power trips. I despise all law enforcement outside of small town elected sheriffs and cops who live in the towns they patrol. "Professional" cops are nothing but a state sanctioned goon squad.
