Title: Pope's Retreat Preacher Speaks on Antichrist as a "pacifist, ecologist and ecumenist"

VATICAN CITY, March 1, 2007 http://(LifeSiteNews.com) - Papal watchers are wondering what message Pope Benedict XVI was giving when he selected retired Bologna archbishop Cardinal Giacomo Biffi to preach the annual Lenten retreat to the Pope and the top members of the Vatican.

Rocco Palmo, expert Vatican reporter for The Tablet, the international Catholic weekly published in London England has noted the significance of the selection of the Lenten retreat preacher. "Since time immemorial -- or, at least, the retreat's heightened profile over the 20th century -- the selection of the preacher has become a closely-watched indicator of the prevailing winds in the papal apartment," said Palmo on his blog. "(T)he choice often falling to a voice the Pope might like to tout... and not just for a higher prominence on the preaching circuit."

Palmo added weight to his remarks noting that "Before their respective elections to the papacy, both Joseph Ratzinger and Karol Wojtyla were tapped to lead the annual exercises."

This year's selection when it became known created a stir since Cardinal Biffi, while he is known for orthodox faith and frank words, is most well known, at least in the secular media, for his preaching on the Antichrist. In fact, the Times of London reported in 2004 that the Cardinal described the Antichrist as "walking among us".

The Lenten retreat did not disappoint. Cardinal Biffi picked up on his oft repeated theme of the Antichrist, basing his remarks on the works of Vladimir Soloviev, a Russian theologian who has received praise from Pope Benedict prior to his elevation to the pontificate.

Quoting Soloviev, the Cardinal said "the Antichrist presents himself as pacifist, ecologist and ecumenist."

"He will convoke an ecumenical council and will seek the consensus of all the Christian confessions, granting something to each one. The masses will follow him, with the exception of small groups of Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants," he said according to a Zenit translation of a Vatican Radio summary here: http://www.radiovaticana.org/it1/Articolo.asp?c=120479 .

In his "Tale of the Antichrist" Solovyov foresees that a small group of Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants will resist and will say to the Antichrist: "You give us everything, except what interests us, Jesus Christ". For Cardinal Biffi, this narrative is a warning: "Today, in fact, we run the risk of having a Christianity which puts aside Jesus with his cross and resurrection."

The 78-year-old cardinal added that if Christians "limited themselves to speaking of shared values they would be more accepted on television programs and in social groups. But in this way, they will have renounced Jesus, the overwhelming reality of the resurrection."

The cardinal said he believes that this is "the danger that Christians face in our days … the Son of God cannot be reduced to a series of good projects sanctioned by the prevailing worldly mentality."

The preacher of the Spiritual Exercises added that "there are relative values, such as solidarity, love of peace and respect for nature. If these become absolute, uprooting or even opposing the proclamation of the event of salvation, then these values become an instigation to idolatry and obstacles on the way of salvation."

Cardinal Biffi affirmed that "if Christianity -- on opening itself to the world and dialoguing with all -- dilutes the salvific event, it closes itself to a personal relationship with Jesus and places itself on the side of the Antichrist."

Cardinal Biffi's reflections, in fact, are very similar to remarks Pope Benedict made last Fall in a meeting with Swiss Bishops. While Pope Benedict did not speak of the Antichrist, he spoke of a new false or "substitute" religion, calling it also a "successor" of religion.

"Modern society is not simply without morality, but it has, so to speak, 'discovered' and professes a part of morality", the Pope told the Swiss bishops. "These are the great themes of peace, non-violence, justice for all, concern for the poor, and respect for creation."

However, the Pope warned that these "great moral themes" have "become an ethical complex that, precisely as a political force, has great power and constitutes for many the substitute for religion, or its successor."

"It is only if human life is respected from conception to death that the ethics of peace is also possible and credible," concluded the Pope. "It is only then that non-violence can express itself in every direction; only then that we truly welcome creation, and only then that we can arrive at true justice."

No truer words were ever spoken. They just keep the identity hidden. It's the Papacy itself!!!

Does the Papal seat not fit the small description given above?? Furthermore, serious study of the books of Daniel and Revelations clearly show that the Papacy meets ALL the criteria for the anticrhist...

No.

Any given Pope or Bishop, yes, that is the point of the warning, be it pagan, classical, or Christian, be it the Trickster, Loki, Lucifer, or folklore Vampires.

As to serious study, that would require knowing Greek, which I don't, so I have less than a 'serious' interest in those bits.

In fact the Antichrist may not even be one person but a nation or culture or a combination of things.

"the Antichrist presents himself as pacifist, ecologist and ecumenist."

So Jesus was the antichrist?

Damn, that's confusing.

No.

Name one Pope that hasn't been a pacifist.
Name one Pope that hasn't been ecumenical.
You MIGHT name one that hasn't been ecological, but I can't.
AND I can't even begin to count how many ecumenical "councils" have been spearheaded by popes.

Pagan and Christian are the same thing.

You don't have to know Greek. I could give you a very thorough explanation using the Scriptures themselves in uncovering the "mysteries" and the verses from Daniel and Revelations, but it would be quite lengthy...

No, the Messiah didn't fulfill all the requirements laid out in Daniel Chapters 2 (and especially) 7 to be the antichrist.

One of those requirements is that the antichrist would "change times". Another is that he would assume a power of divine authority.

Days are clearly laid out in Genesis chapter 1. Genesis 1:5 ...And the evening and the morning were the first day.

You will find this repeated for each day. The Creator's intention was for our days to run from sunset to sunset. And the 7th day of the week (Saturday) was given us as the Sabbath. The early papacy not only changed our days from midnight to midnight, but also changed the practice of keeping the Sabbath (as it properly was) from sundown Friday till sundown Saturday over to Sunday. AND how did the papal seat (Constantine) do this??? By declaring divine intervention.....

This a TINY bit of the proof... Scripture and history point out ALL the rest.

I find this incredibly amusing. Organized religionists say the silliest things.

When I was a kid, the Catholic Church a block away got electronic "bells" pumped through, literally, Marshall amps. At 7 a.m. every Sunday, I got blasted with electronic renditions of stuff like, again, literally, Anchors Aweigh.

I had a pretty good stereo system I had worked all summer to buy, and I responded with Live at Leeds, with the speakers out the window. Every Sunday, the cops would knock on the door, telling me to turn it down. I said, when the church does, I will. Not til then.

The priest actually tried to defend it with this line. "Our music celebrates God, his celebrates Satan." I said, even if that was true, and I doubt God is in the Navy, that doesn't mean Satan doesn't have equal rights under the law.

This went on for six months, until I graduated high school and left home. Someone in the neighborhood picked up my role, even using Live at Leeds, and the church finally caved.

I still laugh at someone justifying disturbing the peace because they're supposedly glorifying their version of God.

This, though, hits a new low in silliness. You can read anything you want into the Bible or the Koran, but Jesus for sure was into peace and love. I imagine I could find citations that would make him an environmentalist too. The United Council of Churches or some group like that recently came out saying that true Christians should battle global warming and the right-wing lunatics are after the guy's job.

Anyone who wants to tell me the Bible recommends greed, avarice, warmongering, hate, and everything else the right wing stands for is a dangerous, deluded and pathetic person. As is this guy.

If Jesus saw how the Southern Baptists (the white one) interpret his words, or all the TV preachers chanting that Jesus wants you to be rich, there'd be major trouble. I'm not picking on one religion or the other; they're all guilty of the same thing, using scripture to justify evil behavior.

There are Muslims who claim the Koran justifies slaughtering innocents because they aren't "real Muslims." There are Hindus who find nothing wrong with slaughtering Muslims.

My opinion is: If you believe in some deity, why do you need an organized religion? There's something in the Bible about praying in a closet. Why should anyone care what others think about their religion, and why do they need to congregate in packs to be told what to think?

You don't!

If fact, organized religion is the worst thing that ever happened to the Bible. They took it and twisted and distorted things to preach to their CONgregations, and usually for the motive of money. Based upon the size of many of the churches I see (especially new ones), they aren't doing too bad with the collection plate. It's the CONgregation that pays the price in more ways than one - they are being lied to everytime they step foot in the door.

That was a GREAT childhood story - I LOVED it!!!!! THANKS!
