The American Right's Memory Holes by Gary North

DIGG THIS

Conservatives traditionally have wrung their hands about lost traditions. As far as I'm concerned, it's mostly for show these days.

If those on the Right were really concerned about lost traditions, they would begin to recover their own lost traditions. A generation has come to maturity without any notion of what preceded them.

Today, you can buy a copy of Adobe Acrobat Pro for about $250 and a $70 scanner. With these simple tools, you can scan in a page from a magazine or a newsletter. You can post this on the web. The page can be made searchable by Google or any other search engine. It looks very close to the original document. The whole procedure can be farmed out: scanned and put into PDF format for under 30 cents per page. Cheap!

If you want to see excellent examples of this technology in action, see the list of classic books that the Mises Institute has posted.

Book Reprints

I did this years ago with my organizations' books and newsletters: http://www.freebooks.com. I used an older imaging technology: DjVu. It produces a far better image than Acrobat does, but Google doesn't search it. I also produced PDF files with an ancient program that left many errors. At some point, I will re-scan them. But it's not imperative. Anyone can still get the basics. Free.

Think of the gems lying at the bottom of the memory holes. The John Birch Society has decades of American Opinion, plus Robert Welch's letters. The Foundation for Economic Education has decades of The Freeman and Leonard E. Read's Notes from FEE. Human Events has decades of the original newsletter known as Human Events. Where are the complete on-line files of National Review and Russell Kirk's The University Bookman? Modern Age is on-line. Why not all the others?

Somewhere, there are files of newsletters like The Dan Smoot Report and Don Bell Reports. These were gold mines of Constitutional insights and commentary on the leviathan state.

Then there are the newsletters sent to donors by dozens of Right-wing activist organizations. These organizations struggled against the liberal Establishment from the late 1940s through the 1970s. Their efforts are lost to historians and journalists. They are lost to their own donors. All of this material can be scanned in and posted. An intern could do it in one summer vacation, organization by organization.

Then there are the publishing houses: in the early years, Regnery, Devin-Adair, and Caxton; later, Arlington House. Their books are long out of print. They should be on-line. I have in mind the classic books on Roosevelt's maneuvering to get the Japanese to attack the United States, as well as James J. Martin's two-volume masterpiece, American Liberalism and World Politics, 1931–1941.

AN INTERVIEW WITH AN HONEST CONSERVATIVE ACTIVIST

Q: Why doesn't your organization post its old publications on-line?

A: Nobody cares about history.

Q: But you say you're a conservative. Conservatives care about history. Don't you care about history?

A: Not if it doesn't sell. I care about the bottom line.

Q: But what about all the ideological battles of the past?

A: What about them?

Q: Don't your donors today deserve to know about them?

A: Our donors don't send donations based on inconclusive battles by my long-forgotten predecessors. They care about the latest life-and-death struggle for which we have just sent out a fund-raising letter.

Q: But isn't there continuity in history?

A: The only thing I can think of is Teddy Kennedy. My predecessors sent out "Teddy's gonna get you if you don't send us money" fund-raising letters for two decades, and so do I. Teddy still sells.

Q: But aren't there fundamental principles that link your predecessors to you?

A: There is only one. If a fund-raising letter doesn't pull in more money than it cost to mail it, we quit mailing it. My predecessors also adhered to this principle.

Q: But what about the giants of the past, without whom your organization would not exist?

A: They're all dead.

Q: But are their ideas dead?

A: I have no idea.

Q: But haven't you at least skimmed through the back issues?

A: No.

Q: Then why did you become a conservative?

A: Because Ann Coulter has great legs.

Q: Wasn't that what liberals said about Gloria Steinem in 1975?

A: Who's she?

Q: But isn't conservatism a movement based on ideas?

A: Yes, one: "Teddy Kennedy's gonna get you if you don't sent us money."

CONCLUSION

The conservative chatter about the integrity of tradition is mostly that: chatter. The organizations of the Right have their own memory holes. It's not that these are self-conscious memory holes, where historical documents were deposited to be forgotten in order to be rewritten. They are rather memory holes of the dusty filing cabinet variety. Forgotten. Yet conservatism is supposed to the social philosophy of self-conscious memory. I say: "Conservatism is as conservatism does."

If you want the attitude of modern American conservatives toward the history of American conservatism, think of the final scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark. A low-level worker is pushing the crate containing the Ark of the Covenant. He is inside a gigantic warehouse. He pushes the crate around a corner and disappears.

When they started confusing the GOP and the Christian Coalition and Focus on the Family with conservatism, that was the end. Coulter is just the logical end-result, a careerist hate-monger turning ignorance into cash. Just like Tom DeLay, Pat Robertson, the Krazy Kubanos, and all the rest of the nuts calling themselves conservative.

It drives me crazy to see a total NUT described as conservative and presented as such on FauxNoise and Scarborough and so on. There's some guy named Kohn, I think, with a book about the big bad liberal media he's flogging who is just insane, yet he gets air time as a "conservative." He thinks reporting the facts is, ipso facto, liberal. He's the real-world version of Colbert, who often claims reality has a liberal bias. Yet, they take him seriously.

CNN will put Coulter on representing conservatives against a mainstream Dem congressman, and think they've done a good job of fairly representing the argument. I know it's hard to find a real conservative to offer a sane argument, but they DO exist and I'm getting sick of these cartoon characters representing conservatism, even if I am mainly a liberal.

There are people over at DU who just LOVE Coulter et al because they disgrace conservatism. I like having two viable parties keeping each other honest and contending on ideas, not feel-good crap.

I've often said that I can get along fine with a genuine, thoughtful conservative. Hell, on many issues I probably am one.

What I can't stand is Republicans. The GOP has been taken over by flag waving, fag-bashing, bible-thumping fascists. I hope to God we can get them out of power before they launch WWIII by invading Iran.

It is not a Justice System. It is just a system.

Your words...God's ear.

Here's a very loud video (warning, VERY LOUD) of Billy Kristol getting shouted down when he presents the PNAC case for invading Iran at the University of Texas a few days ago.

I sincerely hope that these fascists are toast forever. But despite the disasters they've wrought, they just keep doing the Energizer Bunny imitation.

This has been the essence of "Conservatism" for a long time- empty negative rants about strawmen "liberals" like Teddy Kennedy . . . as they meanwhile barely differ with him on anything of substance- just quibbles about which faction benefits over making government bigger. The GOP adopted "Conservative" language and rhetoric because they were out of power in the Post WWII era and thus never had to deliver on their rhetoric and could feed at the teet of big government and the MIC like their Dem buddies. WHen they finally get into power- suddenly big bad ISLAM is coming and a new 75 year war has to be fought which sadly (wink wink) means the GOP has to forestall making government small or scaling back its size. LOL. So pathetically transparent.

Let's give credit where credit is due. The MIC and DC (And NATO/EU you eurotwits should know that "just following orders" isn't an excuse) where hunting for a new badguys by Jan 01st 1992.

Hell, Bush Sr. threw Gulf War I as the USSR still clung to life. After that and the fall of the Berlin wall other threats were floated:

The Balkins: The Slavic version of Grenada. Thrill as "brave" USAF pilots bomb undefended villages from 30,000 feet and blow 10 year old unarmed training versions of the MIG-29 out of the sky and then thump their chests about what "bad asses" they are. Camp BondSteel turned a hefty profit for Halliburton through.

China: I have to admit I do worry about them and the "R"s still make noises every now and again, but DC won't be fighting them any time soon because they just love the boatloads of consumer goods they send over in exchange for all that worthless green paper we give them.

Africa: The idea of "Peace Keepers" was floated a few times. No one was really interested. No one wants to step into that hornet's nest. In the words of Thomas Chittum: "Send more peace keepers! The last batch was delicious!"

Arab/Israel conflict: Nothing but hot air about how "someone" should do "something." Given up on because it's more profitable for the weapons makers in the US, Russia, China, and the EU for the Jews and Arabs keep killing each other.

9/11 was mana from heaven for the power mongers. All of the other threats were jokes or easily ignored. Ohhhhhhh but 9/11 and Islam's version of the rapture monkeys spouting off to every TV camera they can find, I bet the MIC of all nations cheered and clapped on that day...including the US ones.

Side note: As Hitler said about the Jews "If they did not exist we would have to invent them." This is why I will listen to different theories about how the events of 9/11 went down. I think FEDGOV got sick and tired of not being able to find a "good" bad guy.

What I can't stand is Republicans.

Can you believe the bloviator Rush actually had the audacity to say the followng the other day...and I paraphrase but I'm damn close: "Liberals want big government and they want it to control your lives. Conservatives [READ REPUBLICANS] want to reign in government so you can control your own life."

Obviously, loudmouth young foreign girl stud trip Rush has never heard of the Patriot Act or any other of Chimp's Unconstitutional orders such as destroying habeus corpus. We are rules by a damned FASCIST and Rush thinks he was given the office of potus by the Almighty himself.

What an obvious paid shill and traitor to the Truth and to his country.
