So why haven't we invaded India? by Richard Fleet Dartmouth Source: WESTERN MORNING NEWS One of the reasons given for our involvement in Afghanistan was that women were being discriminated against and girls were denied even elementary education. Both Bush and Blair wish us to believe our invasion of Iraq was all about bringing 'democracy' to that country and not about oil, which we all know was the only reason. We accuse Syria and Iran of being, among other things, undemocratic dictatorships, and yet we have only praise and encouragement for India, an economic giant and business partner, where we are informed half a million female foetuses are aborted annually. Over ten million girl foetuses were destroyed in the last two decades, on top of which millions of baby girls were dumped all over the place in toilets, railway and bus stations etc. Over 900,000 girls apparently disappear every year; since 1994 sales of high-quality ultrasound machines to determine the sex of the foetus, supposed to be banned in India, are running at 10,000 a year, and this number is expected to double every three years. Not so long ago our politicians bent over backwards to apologise about so-called racism to an Indian inmate in a third-rate TV programme. Did they ever raise a voice of protest in favour of those tens of millions of innocent victims? Quite rightly, we are up in arms for the millions of innocent victims in Darfur and elsewhere in Africa, but nothing about the victims of one of our main business partners, rated as a great democracy because it holds elections of a sort. We appear to accept double standards when it suits us and don't give a damn about ethics, justice and morality. I have never heard any of our protagonists of human rights raise their voices against this crime against humanity: too busy, no doubt, fighting for the rights of political activists and illegal immigrants. Harvey Thane Clovelly IN RESPONSE to the comments of Dominic Clifton ("Mackerel haul backlash", February 23), the pelagic fishing industry is subject to strict quotas which regulate the quantity of fish which may be landed. The stock levels relating to pelagic species such as mackerel have been increasing in recent years and the stocks are in a healthy and stable position. The ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Seas) permitted total allowable catch (UK only) for 2005-06 increased by nine percent (104,000 tonnes) and for 2006-07 by 13 per cent (118,000 tonnes). In May 2006 Interfish vessels were awarded Marine Stewardship Council accreditation for responsible and sustainable actions in fishing North Sea herring. In recent years the MSC has also agreed that the north-east Atlantic mackerel stock is being fished at a sustainable level. A haul such as this is not irresponsible; this is commercial fishing which sustains employment in the South West. Unqualified comments about fishing practices and stock levels are misleading to the public and damaging to the industry. Andrew Pillar Fishing Fleet Manager Interfish, Plymouth I FEEL compelled to reply to the letter from Mr Peter Coneybeare (February 20) on council tax. I am sure readers must be getting weary of reading "Councillors spend GBP160,000 on water at County Hall." Is it possible for 82 members to spend GBP160,000 on water per annum? Try GBP34,000: and that is not for county councillors, but available to the entire staff and is a statutory requirement. I also question Mr Coneybeare's GBP360,000 on a "self promoting magazine". I suspect the cost of production will be less and will save the county money, and at the same time present the council's services to pretty well every household in the county. As for the Lib-Dem leader and his cronies hiring an aircraft for GBP15,000 to visit an Incinerator on the Isle of Man, this would be a cheaper rate than individuals going in their own groups. In fact, far from the passengers being Lib-Dem Cronies, this was available to all party members; in fact those with anti- incinerator views also had the opportunity to see the plant on the Isle of Man for themselves. Correction number four regards "Lib-Dems pay themselves 28 per cent rise", and let me point out that the increase was far, far less than that, and much lower than other members in their position on other authorities in the country. Furthermore, Cornwall council tax payers are paying the second lowest amount within all the shire counties. Glenton Brown Lib-Dem county councillor Tintagel I AM a volunteer at Bodmin Capio Treatment Centre and, in view of the recent negative publicity, I would like to redress the balance. The patients I chaperone for their procedures are naturally apprehensive but when they are ready to go home they are all so enthusiastic about their treatment that I find it very cheering. Forget the politics and financial concerns for a moment and realise that, from a patient's point of view, this is a five-star treatment centre. In my view, this excellent facility is what patients deserve. Margaret Stevens Bodmin I WOULD like to thank Bill Taylor (West Country regional manager, Digital UK) for his reply to my letter through your letters page. I had already consulted numerous postcode checkers, but having done so again it's nice to know that our postcode appears to be a very exclusive area where we will not be able to receive digital TV through a set-top box. As I said previously, I have no confidence in any assurances Digital UK makes about the availability of terrestrial TV signals until the changeover demonstrates positively that they can be received.

India supports the US dollar by fixing its currency (rupee) artificially low to the US dollar - just like China.
Galatians 3:29 And if ye [be] Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Patience grasshopper, patience. Iran and Syria have to be dealt with first. As the only governments in the ME that are not US installed puppets and not ruled over by a thief elite that presides over the raping of their economies by US "Free trade"- they are naturally "threats" to the US. India, though a "friend" now, could be made an enemy overnight- with little effort and myriad reasons to justify invading or murdering large numbers of them sold to the America public- which is ever in need of enemies to hate and wars to cheer on. When US Presidents start issuing "happy Diwali" day cards, and our TeeVee shows have two types of Indians- the evil women killing terrorist kind- and the deracinated self hating pro American good kind- then India needs to start worrying and should invest heavily in bomb shelters and artificial limbs.
