ABC: Rove Suggested Firing All U.S. Attorneys

By Paul Kiel - March 15, 2007, 5:08 PM

From ABC:

New unreleased e-mails from top administration officials show the idea of firing all 93 U.S. attorneys was raised by White House adviser Karl Rove in early January 2005, indicating Rove was more involved in the plan than previously acknowledged by the White House.... White House press secretary Tony Snow told reporters Tuesday that Miers had suggesting firing all 93 and that it was "her idea only." Snow said Miers' idea was quickly rejected by the Department of Justice.

However, Miers was Bush's staff secretary at that time in January 2005. She did not become White House counsel for another month, after Gonzales left to become attorney general.

The latest e-mails show that Gonzales and Rove both were involved in the discussion, and neither rejected it out of hand.

Schumer on MSNBC demanding that Rove testify under oath, saying that emails PROVE the White House lied to Congress, that Rove, not Meiers, was involved. He sounded PISSED.

Even Tony Blankly agrees now that the way they fired these guys smells to high heaven, that questions about why these 8 were picked out are legit. Called it an unforced error. Misrepresenting the facts.

This is blowin' up REALLLLLLL Good.

Oh, man, the gift that keeps on giving

Did White House staffers violate Presidential Records Act by using outside e-mail addresses to conduct business? Submitted by CREW on 15 March 2007 - 2:06pm. Bush Administration | Jack Abramoff | Justice Department | Susan Ralston

Did they? That's what CREW wants to know.

White House staffers who dealt with with Jack Abramoff and the U.S. Attorney firings sent e-mails from outside addresses linked to the Republican National Committee (RNC) to circumvent the mandatory record-keeping system. Today, CREW sent a letter to Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), asking for an investigation into whether the White House has violated its mandatory record-keeping obligation under the Presidential Records Act (PRA).

Our letter to Chairman Waxman and the accompanying documents can be found here.

One email released by the House Judiciary Committee earlier this week, sent to Justice Department Chief of Staff D. Kyle Sampson from J. Scott Jennings, White House Deputy Political Director, uses an email account, SJennings@gwb43.com, on a server owned by the Republican National Committee. This raises serious questions about whether the White House was trying to deliberately evade its responsibilities under the PRA, which directs the president to take all necessary steps to maintain presidential records to provide a full accounting of all activities during his tenure.

This isn't the first time. A number of other emails from Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove's former assistant Susan Ralston to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff document Ms. Ralston's use of three outside domains: http://rnchq.com (used for the headquarters of the Republican National Committee), http://georgebush.com and http://aol.com. In many of these emails Ms. Ralston is communicating inside White House information to Mr. Abramoff in response to Mr. Abramoff's efforts to broker deals for his clients and place specified individuals in positions within the administration.

CREW has learned that to fulfill its statutory obligations under the PRA, the White House email system automatically copies all messages created by staff and sends them to the White House Office of Records Management for archiving. Given these development, it now appears that the White House deliberately bypassed the automatic archiving function of its own email system that was designed to ensure compliance with the PRA.

Melanie Sloan summed up CREW's position:

Now that we know that at least two White House officials have circumvented the law by using alternate email systems to discuss the U.S. Attorney firings and Jack Abramoff, we are asking Chairman Waxman to investigate whether the White House has continually violated its mandatory record-keeping obligation under the Presidential Records Act. This administration continues to disregard the law in favor of agenda-driven politics.

The whole story has a foul smell to it. The politicos in the WH know how to avoid attention when they are up to no good, so why didn't they just fire 2 a week for 4 weeks rather than firing all 8 at once and running a red flag up the flag pole? The media is real good about drawing our attention to the barn fire when we should be looking at who is robbing the bank.

Gee whiz, the Bush Administration doesn't think it is bound by law!?!? There's a shocker.
