Title: Outed CIA officer to tell her story to Congress [C-Span Babe Watch Alert]

WASHINGTON -- Valerie Plame's life changed the day her name appeared in a newspaper column, her job as a CIA officer exposed in black and white.

THE COUPLE IN QUESTION: Former CIA officer Valerie Plame and her husband, Joseph Wilson, say her CIA job was revealed to retaliate for Wilson's public criticism of the administration. - HARAZ N. GHANBARI / Associated Press

She goes before a House committee today as both a shadowy figure and a celebrity, with lucrative book and movie deals in the works, a magazine cover in her past and her unceremonious unmasking four years ago the subject of persistent intrigue.
Now she is lifting the veil by her own hand, and to maximum effect.
The House is not in session today, and Plame's only competition for attention in Washington is a Senate subcommittee hearing on next year's budget for smaller federal agencies, and the annual St. Patrick's Day exchange of shamrocks at the White House between President Bush and Ireland's prime minister. In other words, it's no contest.
She's telling her story to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, where Democrats are eager to explore the circumstances of her outing and how the White House responded to the leak of her identity.
Although she's had little to say publicly, Plame has made more than a few splashy appearances with her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson. Last month alone, the Wilsons attended a book party for Terry McAuliffe, the former Democratic Party chairman, and were spotted having lunch with actress Morgan Fairchild at the Four Seasons.
Then there was last year's announcement that they were suing Bush administration officials they blame for ending her career. They rubbed elbows with Washington's glitterati at a celebrity-studded awards dinner for the White House press corps that year.
The couple famously posed in his Jaguar for the January 2004 cover of Vanity Fair magazine. A scarf covered Plame's blond hair, and dark sunglasses hid her eyes -- deepening the sense of mystery.
The disclosure of Plame's name closed one chapter in her life but opened others.
The mother of 7-year-old twins, a boy and girl, is finishing a book about her life and the leak of her name, tentatively titled "Fair Game," for which publisher Simon & Schuster paid her an advance of more than $1 million.
"She is hopeful she'll be able to get it out soon," Wilson said last week. "She's in discussion with the CIA about it."
Plame submitted the manuscript to the CIA for a mandatory review, which is done to make sure the book tells no government secrets. It was returned to Plame, who left the agency in January 2006, with suggestions.
"We are all awaiting Ms. Wilson's resubmission," CIA spokesman Mark Mansfield said Thursday. "In most cases, we are able to work it out in a way that satisfies everyone's concerns."
Plame's story also is headed for the big screen. Warner Bros. is developing a film based on the couple's lives, a screenplay is being written, and Plame and her husband are expected to serve as consultants.
The civil case against Bush administration officials also is moving forward. Arguments are set for May 17 in U.S. District Court.
Plame and her husband blame Vice President Dick Cheney; presidential adviser Karl Rove; I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Cheney's former chief of staff; and former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage for revealing her identity and, effectively, ending her career. They say it was done to retaliate for an opinion piece critical of the administration that Wilson had written for The New York Times in July 2003.

Also, Plame hinted that bad things happened to other covert agents because of the leak; but she is unable to give specifics.

Bottom line, no one will want to work for or with the CIA. (Well, except MI6 and Mossad - but of course, Valerie didn't say that)

Valerie does know KNOW that Cheney KNEW that she was under covers. Therefore... they're all innocent and should get more medals.

Case closed.

Oh, and she was NOT demoted for the crime of being outed. So, where's the harm?

It's my understanding that Plame-Wilson was tracking rogue nuclear materials from Russia that was otherwise destined for the black market, and her very comprehensive informant network was shattered instantly, driving them and the available fissile materials deeper underground. The US could have purchased that potential dirty bomb ingredient to keep it out of the hands of "bad people".

If a device is detonated in the west either with or without the level of techno sophistication needed to result in fission, it will more than likely be made with Russian radioactive material.

If such a device is detonated, that will very much suit the interests of any neocons and members of the military-industrial complex who survive the event.

I just posted about her too, but I think "noticeable" is the goal, not freak.

Ok.

I think June and Ward Cleaver may disagree with you, but that's another discussion for another time.

Oh no, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) just asked Valerie if in fact she was not covert, and he said Victoria Toensing (lawyer, and wife of former US Attorney Joseph DeGenova) is going to testify later to that effect.

Toensing and DeGenova are both lawyers for Tom Capano here in DE, and they also defend crooked federal govt types. I guess Victoria is going to "lawyer us all" and sprinkle some fairie dust around to try and protect the regime.

"As reported by Olbermann, who gives Joseph Wilson an opportunity to respond to Joseph Degenova's blathering today on NPR. DeGenova stated today on NPR that Wilson's report on Niger actually supported the conclusion that Iraq was trying to procure enriched uranium from the African nation. Wilson pointed out that DeGenova is wrong about a lot including that he (DeGenova) is still trying to perpetrate the lie that Plame was not a covert agent (a lie specifically refuted by Patrick Fitzgerald's investigation). How many times does Wilson have to say it? C'mon NPR, you can do better than that."

Right you are. Wall-Eye, as I prefer to call Vickie, was closely associated with the "Elves" or "Scaifettes," which included Mr. Ann Coulter. She's a flat-out right-wing operative, as is her worthless husband. I'm not sure elves sprinkle faerie dust, but you get the point.

That's their "no foul, no harm" defense. It's a lie. As is the lie that she was not undercover. She was DEEP undercover, and her cover company, which included other agents in the WMD group, was blown when the Bushies outed her.

I'd love to ask each of the leakers (like Novak) just what their intentions were.

I'd treat Novak as a hostile witness and ask, "Did you know that BushCo was attempting to punish Joseph Wilson by outing his wife and implying that she was instrumental in his selection to travel to Niger to investigate the yellowcake story?"

"Did you know that BushCo was attempting to discredit the yellowcake evidence because the charge that Saddam had attempted to purchase it was untrue and likely "fabbed up" in The White House?"

"If you were asked to help the White House discredit Wilson/Plame would you have agreed to do so?"

"At any time was the subject of a presidential pardon mentioned in the event of you being criminally charged and convicted?"

Those are the questions Novak is ducking with his "protecting sources" argument. He knew what he was doing would out an operative, but his loyalty to the GOP overcame his loyalty to the United States.

In the case of a criminal act, protection of sources is a no-go among journalists. He hasn't got a leg to stand on, but some journalists, worried about a slippery slope, are backing him and Judy Miller, both Bush operatives.

Right, but I wonder whether it is his loyalty to the GOP or perhaps loyalty to something else....

This round is way more interesting than the Plame testimony. The WH security officer basically admits that he doesn't do anything about security leaks if they are done by his higher-ups - and, apparently, just about anyone at the WH is his 'higher up'.

His MO is like this: no investigation whatsoever if an outside criminal investigation is going on. And, after it's over... well... he's not really going to open the cans of worms.

Diane Watson (D-Calif) nailed Vickie's nazi hide to the wall. Vickie keeps trying to say, as she has brayed all over Fox for years, that Plame was not covert "under the statute." Watson pointed out she was invited to speak about a Presidential Directive, under which anyone being considered covert's identity is classified. She finally got Wall-Eye to admit she was covert under the directive.
