Girls, scented candles are dangerous.

Especially to a chemically sensitive person like me.

I woke up from a couch nap to find that for the past few hours deadly chemical fumes from a candle on my mantle were collecting in the room. They started at the ceiling and filled the room down the way smoke would. When I woke and sat up I took a few breaths, tasted laundry detergent and suddenly went into respiratory distress. I went to another room and my heart rate was about 120 bpm while I breathed some clean air and recovered from the clandestine gas attack.

To people who aren't bothered by the candles and can't seem to smell the stuff that resembles a burning tire and diesel fuel (ugh! it literally squeezes my bronchial tubes squeeze shut) I say,

Believe me people, it's like you're colorblind and I can see colors that you can't. I'm smelling and reacting to the mysterious chemical ingredients of a scented candle, so in effect I can serve as a coal mine canary and warn you that you're breathing bad stuff even if you're not aware of it.

Chemically sensitive people.

We're out here.

And we're trying to warn you for your own good.

Even if you were born with charcoal filters in your nose it's still better if you don't breathe that stuff. If you could perceive as I do you'd never ask why again.

When I was at my daughter's recently helping her with her children one weekend, I went around and collected all these nasty fake scents she had plugged into various outlets and threw them in the garage. Then I opened the windows. It's not that I was in any kind of distress, but I'm sure I felt better.

Outstanding performance above and beyond humanitarian kindness.

May your name reverberate for all eternity.

i've read that candles leave a toxic pollutant in the air so i don't use them. i'm surprised that you had a scented one burning in your home when you're so sensitive to them. was someone trying to do you in? ;)

What chemicals are you talking about specifically?

What chemicals are you talking about specifically?

Depleted uranium and plutonium chloride I think.

Do you have a Geiger counter to read alpha?

But, seriously, it is considered a trade secret and candle scent manufacturers cannot be compelled to reveal the ingredients. In fact all scent manufacturers including shampoos, soaps and toilet wash may keep their ingredients secret.

it's like you're colorblind and I can see colors that you can't.

It's possible everyone has the same favorite color. If I see red the way you see blue, and I see blue the way you see red, we'd both say roses are red and violets are blue, and yet have completely different perceptions of the world.

"Can it be May so soon?"
"Yes," said Frog. "Look at your calendar."

There is a company in Wyoming that makes scented candles and handcreams that are supposedly free from this stuff. The company is JaCaMo and the guy is like you, he says he can smell all the garbage in normal candles and lotions and he can't stand it. He has a publication about all the stuff normal scented candles put in the air. A lot of soot and oils that you probably don't want to breath.

JaCaMo's site could use some immediate help for those trying to order on-line.

I'll keep checking back - thanks for the information.

WOw, the company has a fascinating history.

"We are located in the first grocery warehouse in the state of Wyoming. Yes, this is a very old building and just looking at the outside of it is amazing. Cheyenne is full of history in the downtown area. We have been here almost 16 years and there is still interesting historic detatils about downtown Cheyenne that we are still learning."

Yeah, the first grocery warehouse owned by the railroad and all the signs were in Chinese, the workers got paid in scrip and the only place they could spend it was the company store. ;)

Funny!

'tis, it is.

Course it can't be deduced from first principles. It has to be learned by induction.
