Dick Cheney and the mysterious $140,000 contract

by John Aravosis (DC) · 3/27/2007 08:13:00 PM ET

TPM has more information on Dick Cheney's odd ties to the corrupt GOP lobbyist who bought off Randy "Duke" Cunningham. How did this guy, out of nowhere, get the contract to screen the president's mail, presumably for Anthrax? The guy was a nobody. Had never had a federal contract before. His company showed no revenue, ever. Yet somehow the guy is hired by Dick Cheney's office to oversee the Anthrax mail threat at the White House, and then the guy gets hundreds of millions of dollars of DOD contracts, and bribes a sitting GOP congressman. All because Dick Cheney for some reason let this incredibly corrupt stranger in the very secure White House door shortly after September 11.

As Josh Marshall notes:

It all comes back to the same question. Why did a company like Wade's, which had no track record whatsoever and had only been approved to receive federal government contracts two months earlier, get a contract from the White House to screen the mail of the President of the United States? Was Wade actually working in concert with or as the cut out for accused fellow Cunningham briber Brent Wilkes? And what role might Doolittle and Ney have played? And what about Wade's claims of having pull with the Vice President? Is that what got him the deal?

Read Josh's update - there's more to this story that the White House isn't telling us.

Looks like another story to follow.

Just one more tidbit:

"Carol Lam wasn't looking to prosecute corruption when she stumbled into Duke Cunningham, Brent Wilkes (MZM), Dusty Foggo, Jerry Lewis. The case originated because of local newspaper article (San Diego Union Tribute) about Cunningham's unlikely luck in selling his Encinitas home to MZM for far more than the fair market value."

(November 28, 2005 -- 11:54 PM EDT)

In the charges released yesterday against Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-CA) by the United States Attorney in San Diego, the man identified in the 'information' as "Co-conspirator #2" is none other than Mr. Mitchell Wade, formerly CEO and founder of MZM, Inc., the man whose sweetheart purchase of Cunningham's house was the thread that started Duke's skein of corruption unravelling.

Now, Mitchell Wade has since left MZM to spend more time with his lawyers. But before his high-flying life as a corrupt defense contractor came to a grinding halt last summer he was into more than Duke Cunningham. Wade's MZM was in deep with Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL).

MZM also has ties to a Republican congressman from Virginia, Virgil Goode. In the 2004 election cycle, Goode's largest contributor was MZM; its political action committee and its employees, including Wade, gave a total of $48,551, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Goode was the principal sponsor of a provision in 2003 defense legislation that called for the creation of a military center in his district, known as the Foreign Supplier Assessment Center, which MZM was hired to run, said a senior defense official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the issue's sensitivity.

The official added that the center, which is meant to check on the ownership of foreign companies that contract with the Defense Department, will do useful work, but was not a Pentagon priority and was not requested by the Defense Department. It was mandated by Goode on MZM's behalf, the official said.

Do they award contracts for 'food tasters'?

A food taster is a person that takes food to be served to someone else to confirm that it is safe to eat and does not contain toxins or poisons. The person to whom the food is going to be served is usually an important person, like an emperor or monarch, or anyone that could possibly be under threat of assassination or harm.

The safety of the food is determined by observing whether or not the food taster subsequently becomes ill. Food tasting would not be effective against slow-acting poisons that take a long time to show any visible symptoms.

Now, Mitchell Wade has since left MZM to spend more time with his lawyers.

Used to be "to spend more time with his family."

Now it's lawyers.

I've already said too much.

Excellent insight:

"Today I got a glance at a key section of the book and it reveals that what that contract was really for was for screening the president's mail.

That's right, screening the president's mail, presumably for Anthrax and other similar biohazards. Remember, this was in mid-2002, not long after the Anthrax scare that shut down several offices on Capitol Hill. So this is a pretty important contract, a pretty sensitive task on any number of levels."
