My daughter, who is 16, applied for early admission at a Great Books college here in Chicago, Shimer College, and was accepted. Then they had a competition for two full four-year scholarships last Saturday. The Dean just called, and Kathleen was one of the winners. It's like hitting the lottery...except it wasn't luck.

Enormously proud dad here. She was literally dropping out of high school she was so unhappy, and this place is exactly right for her. She got to meet many of the students and loves the place. There's more than a little relief mixed with the joy.

We're headed out to a fancy restaurant to celebrate!

fantastic news!

a lot of decent people who are intelligent are bored with the mediocrity that is ubiquitous now-a-days. it's great if she has a place to go and really study especially a classic curriculum.

Congrats to you and to your girl.

My first born will be 16 in 6 years so I'd be curious to hear how you make it happen.

When the GI Bill of Rights was passed for WW2 vets, tuition at the Ivies was less than $1,000 ($10,000 inflation-adjusted).

Only about 40% of WW2 GIs was a high school grad.

I've already said too much.

Thank you all. She's a great kid, and deserves what she earned. We would have gotten her in there one way or the other, but at $22K a year, it would have been tough. Now, no sweat. It really hasn't sunk in yet; it's still this great concept, but it won't be real for a couple of days when she pre-registers and picks her classes. She's already sort of wistfully asking if she has to go back to Mass. to finish this year. I said, dream on.

I've missed her a lot this year, and almost wish she didn't have to go back next week, but the high school gave her a very generous scholarship and now they get to include her SATs and the fact she jumped to college in their record. So yeah, she has to go back.

Hard to believe my kid is a college student. Seems like about a month ago she was in 4th grade.

Best wishes to your daughter - that's quite an accomplishment - and best of luck in her new and challenging academic endeavors!

ok,,so what did y'all have for your celebratory dinner?

We had tapas, including grilled octopus, artichokes, duck ravioli, and lamb dumplings. Then a huge paella stuffed with prawns, shrimp and clams and other seafood munchies. Creme brulee with raspberries for dessert. I'm still stuffed.

I got an interesting detail out of her about how she glommed on to Shimer. After her ACT tests, which she aced, she got an email from them, then a follow-up, which for some reason ended up in her trash folder. She was cleaning out the folder and accidentally clicked on it, which reminded her, so she went to the website and saw they had early admission. Being desperate to get out of high school, she applied and submitted all her writing and so on and got accepted. Then they told her about the scholarship competition.

All because she accidentally clicked on an email. There's a moral in here somewhere, but damned if I can figure it out.
