Hundreds of I-R-S laptops with sensitive information have been misplaced or stolen over a three-and-a-half year period.

And I-R-S inspector general J. Russell George says over 25-hundred taxpayer identities and other data are at risk. He says they have "no idea" whose data has been compromised.

George says between January 2003 and June 2006, 490 laptops or other data system equipment disappeared. And in 76 percent of the cases there was no prompt report, meaning the loss of valuable time in taking corrective action.

He says in many cases the devices were left at bus stations, train stations or airports or in unlocked luggage. He calls the carelessness "inexcusable."

The I-G says data on the equipment was not properly encrypted or otherwise protected.

In 3-1/2 years, the IRS [who demands that taxpayers filing long form 1040s maintain every single receipt for 7 years] routinely loses 140 items per year. Put another way, that comes to 11.6 laptops/other data systems which are lost each and every single month!

Worse yet, these incompetents don't bother to make timely reports, let alone make sure the private taxpayer information they are tossing around like bean bats is properly encrypted to assure that Joe Sixpack or Bill Gates types of citizens financial data remains confidential.

EDIT: Pouring salt on the wound is accomplished because no one ever gets punished for these actions!

Just as with the rest of feeble gubmint, 'trust us' is a first class joke. I trust them about as far as I can toss an elephant--or a jackass for that matter!

I'll have one, thanks. Where do they sell these things? For cheap, I'm sure.
