Singer and campaigner Bob Geldof is planning to stage a Live Aid-style concert to coincide with the UK hosting July's G8 summit of world leaders.

Called Live 8, the event is expected to take place in London's Hyde Park but no firm date has yet been set.

It comes 20 years after the first Live Aid was held at London's Wembley Stadium and JFK Stadium in the US.

Live 8 will focus attention on poverty and disease in Africa but it is not yet known if it will also raise funds.

Geldof's spokeswoman confirmed that the Live Aid Trust had been "discussing the plans to hold an event around the time of the G8 summit".

Prime Minister Tony Blair will be joined by the leaders of the other G8 nations for the summit which is due to take place at the Perthshire resort of Gleneagles in the first week of July.

Live 8 follows on from the success of the Christmas Band Aid II single, a reworking of the 1984 fundraising hit record, both of which were organised by Geldof.

Band Aid II topped the charts last Christmas and raised £15m for charities in Africa.

The first Live Aid included big names from the rock and pop world including Madonna and Queen, and Live 8 is also expected to attract an impressive musical line-up.

However, plans for the event have forced London radio station Capital FM to scrap plans for the annual Party in the Park, held in Hyde Park in support of The Princes Trust.

Capital FM managing director Keith Pringle said Capital would support Live 8 by providing a number of services for free in the interest of "the greater good".

Martina Milburn, chief executive of The Princes Trust added: "Capital and The Prince's Trust are delighted to support Live 8 and we look forward to Party in the Park next year."
