Title: Baking Soda to Be Banned In St. Louis !

Frankly, I don't see anything exceptionally stupid about this law :

First, the state said you must make a special trip to the pharmacy counter to buy certain cold medicines. That was to curb production of methamphetamine.

Now, a St. Louis legislator wants you to do the same thing to buy an even more common household item — baking soda — because it's used to make crack cocaine.

Sales of cold medications containing pseudoephedrine, such as Sudafed, are strictly regulated in Missouri. Customers must show a photo ID when they buy the medicine. Pharmacists must log the names and addresses of buyers, including how much they buy. People under 18 may not buy the medicines.

The sponsor of the baking soda bill, Rep. Talibdin El-Amin, D-St. Louis, said the same approach was needed for baking soda because crack cocaine is often produced by dissolving powdered cocaine in a mixture of water and baking soda.

Note that I used the word "exceptionally." That is, this bill is really no stupider than the cold medicine law. In both cases, you're treating the vast majority of people who use a legal product legally like children, simply because a few people use it illegally. Still, supporters of the meth law are dismissive of this one.

"When you generate a list of people who use baking soda, it pretty much includes everyone. It's a common household item," said Tom Murphy, a special agent with the St. Louis division of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

And how is that different from cold and allergy medication? I'd wager that a pretty high percentage of American households have those, too. No, Sudafed doesn't dissolve the odors in your refrigerator (then again, neither does baking soda). But should we really subject the citizens of Missouri to the scourge of crack cocaine if simply asking them to take the time to sign a registry can eliminate it forever, just like meth? That's not too much to ask, is it?

Unlike Pete Guither (hat tip), I actually think drug policy reformers should embrace this bill. In fact, I think they should urge the Missouri legislature to pass it. Better yet, let's pressure Armand Hammer to stop its shameless crack profiteering, and put out a substitute baking soda that can't be used by crack pushers. It needn't be effective as a baking additive. In fact, it can be completely useless. The only important thing is that it can't be turned into crack.

Perhaps once we're required to sign notebooks to purchase everything from baking soda to computer duster people will begin to see how silly all of this really is.

I don't use OTC medications but I use a lot of baking soda for cleaning. I also use it instead of toothpaste, which I haven't used for decades. My dentist is always surprised at how little build-up I have. Of course, it might help if I got my teeth cleaned more than once a decade.

Toothpaste is a silly waste of money, and that flouride stuff can stay in the rat poison. Hydrogen peroxide, soda, salt and an occational shot of dollar store mouth wash is all that's needed for great oral health, IMO.

O - include the flossing sticks everyday on the drive to work. Throw in an occational snorting of warm salt water. Yearly cost maybe $10.00.

Of course, it might help if I got my teeth cleaned more than once a decade.

After having two "floating" molars removed last year, (as well as having all mercury removed) I'm on a quarterly cleaning program now.

I guess I'll die with happy chompers.

Hydrogen peroxide, soda, salt

Actually I use hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and sea salt. Flossing, too.

Toothpaste? Utter waste, and somewhat dangerous with the flouride.

The dentist just drilled'em, with constant suctioning, and filled the holes with dental bondo stuff.

I don't know if it will do any good or not, but mentally, I feel better knowing the mercury's gone.

dental bondo stuff.

I had my metal fillings removed about 12 years ago. I got the bondo stuff, too.

At least it matches my teeth. I had a gigantic metal filling in a molar and everytime I opened my mouth the glare would blind people.

GOOD TEETH FROM BIRTH TO DEATH with DR. GERARD F. JUDD, Ph.D.

GOODBYE TO TOOTH CAVITIES! GUM INFECTION IS NOW ENDED!

by Dr. Gerard F. Judd, Ph.D., Chemistry and Fluoride Researcher

May 5, 2001

I now place in everyone's hand the complete answer to tooth cavities. Following this procedure there will not be one more cavity, one more gingivitis case, or one more fluorosed, brittle, cracked tooth in the world. Bad teeth in Ireland, Canada, the USA, Britain, Australia and New Zealand will now be curbed. The 55-year fight with fluoride promoters (dentists) in these countries is over since research now establishes for certain that fluoride makes the teeth WORSE and not better (refs 1,2,3). My book, Good Teeth, Birth to Death lays out in no uncertain terms all the detail to achieve my claims.

I have talked to thousands of people about their teeth, many of whom have perfect teeth. In all those cases of perfect teeth, the practice of rinsing while eating has been the reason, and not fluoride. I am convinced that perfect teeth have little or nothing to do with genetics. The best way to have perfect teeth besides staying away from greedy or incompetent dentists is to pursue the following behavior:

1. Rinse acids off the teeth during eating (ref 4).

2. Brush the teeth with bar soap (ref 5).

3. Take calcium pills with vitamin D daily (ref 6).

4. Take monosodium phosphate daily (ref 7).

5. Take freshly made sodium ascorbate daily for gum connections to the teeth (ref 8).

6. Dispense with the worry that bacteria harm teeth: THEY CANNOT (ref 9).

7. Dispense with the worry that sugar destroys teeth. I find sugar has little or nothing to do with cavities (ref 10).

8. Avoid all fluoride products. They destroy teeth, unravel enzymes and cause 113 ailments (ref 11).

Toothpaste? Flouride? Haven't touched it in decades.

I'm for rule of law but these latest laws about cough medicine and now baking soda peeve me off. Why should the majority of law abiding citizens be inconvenienced and insulted with "sign in's" at pharmacies to purchase OTC meds in the hopes that it will prevent the drug abuse by low life drug addicts. Who cares about them? If they overdose on home made illicit drugs, that's more criminal losers off the streets.

Still using Dr. Bronner's on your recommendation...taste doesn't even faze me. After reading the 'toothpaste' thread; I checked the tube of Arm and Hammer's that my wife has been using (soap for her? NO WAY). The poison control warning is right on the back; plain as day.

You can't make crack (or meth, I believe) without it.

O - include the flossing sticks everyday on the drive to work.

Yeah, buddy, I use those things religiously. I fought with dental floss for years and the sticks are much easier to use.

Although I use toothpaste I've used the same regular CREST since I was a kid, and when I was very young I heard some "expert" say that all one needs is a glob about the size of a pearl on the toothbrush, and that's how I do it.

Of course hygiene appointments twice a year and a million or two in dental work have helped keep the smile bright.

You have got to be fucking kidding me. So, I guess this means bakeries will be fronts for Meth Labs right???

The people in Missouri, need to take out and kick their legislators in the ass for being so fucking stupid.

Regulation on common items is the first wave of regulation on everything you buy. Who wants to bet that they're monitoring how much gasoline you buy? How much do you want to bet they're monitoring how much electricity you use? Natural Gas? How much food do you eat? How much beer and soda do you drink? How much soap do you buy? How many batteries do you buy at a time? How much intrusion into your lives are you willing to take?

It is time for people to demand more intelligent leadership. For fuck's sake, if they were making crack cocaine out of pepsi cola, you can better believe they wouldn't be regulating it. You can better believe that if they were making crack cocaine out of coca cola, they wouldn't be regulating it.

This is a means to an end. To control people's ability to make food. This isn't about some fucking piece of gutter trash drug dealer making crack, it's about people's ability to make food. Just like the whole Meth legislation is about regulating the over the counter medication, to control people from self-medicating, and saving themselves a ton of cash with big Pharma.

This country deserves to be destroyed because the people of this country are simply incapable of self-governance. If we had a REAL citizenry, there'd be vigilantes running the drug dealers, and gangs out of town, like they did way back when. Instead, we have emasculated police officers who can't do their fucking jobs, who pick on the law abiding instead of going after the people who actually commit the crimes.

I am fortunate where I live, because the police here generally harass those who break the laws, and leave the law abiding well enough alone. The cops know who the criminals are, and they spend most of their time dealing with them. It's only the City Council who dream up new ways to fuck over the taxpayers here.

If this shit were to be passed in Minnesota, there would be an uproar like nobody's business. Let's hope that Missouri gets a pair, and boots these legislators out of the state.

Dying for old bastards, and their old money, isn't my idea of freedom.
