I know John O'Neil was very distinguished in his fighting record in Vietnam. and so I found these lyrics in honor of him and others like him.

yes, his character is portrayed in the book 'we were soldiers - and young' which is the book that Mel Gibson used for his movie 'We Were Soldiers'. he was at the battle portrayed in that movie. He was a legend from Vietnam war. and killed now by our own government.

I think maybe the one book I mentioned might be the only source.

there were a lot of American heroes from Vietnam war. I don't like it when people say we lost because I know our soldiers performed so very well. and we did defeat the enemy in all the significant fighting.
