A scientific survey found that those who watched Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart were more informed than Fox News viewers. Stunning when you thing about it. Fox News runs 168 hours a week. And the combined Colbert report and Daily Show run 4 hours a week. NEW YORK A new survey of 1,502 adults released Sunday by Pew Research Center for the People & the Press found that despite the mass appeal of the Internet and cable news since a previous poll in 1989, Americans' knowledge of national affairs has slipped a little. For example, only 69% know that Dick Cheney is vice president, while 74% could identify Dan Quayle in that post in 1989. Pew judged the levels of knowledgeability (correct answers) among those surveyed and found that those who scored the highest were regular watchers of Comedy Central's The Daily Show and Colbert Report. They tied with regular readers of major newspapers in the top spot -- with 54% of them getting 2 out of 3 questions correct. Watchers of the Lehrer News Hour on PBS followed just behind. Virtually bringing up the rear were regular watchers of Fox News. Only 1 in 3 could answer 2 out of 3 questions correctly. Maccabee's diary :: :: Democrats and Republicans were about equally represented in the most knowledgeable group but there were more Republicans in the least aware group. I finally realize why Republicans started a war on science: its to disparage the results of scientific surveys that say Republicans are idiots. This is not just an indictment on our caca news media. Its an indictment on Republicans in a general sense. Its something everyone with three brain cells knows absolutely: that there are none so blind as those who will not see. Unfortunately its a full third of this country that would back Bush if he shit in their dinner plate. There are those who, after he shit in their dinner plate, still decide to back him out of sheer ignorant spite. At any rate, its fair to say now that if you watch Fox news, youre an ill-informed asshat, and there is scientific evidence to prove it. Not that that would matter. This is news? Well, maybe the scientific evidence part is. But it makes sense. Suppose you are Roger Ailes and you were charged with fooling the largest number of people possible about the real nature of the GOP and Bush. Would you target the educated and aware classes? No. You would target the half of the population with IQs of less than 100.
