New Study Of US Media Pro-Israel/Zionist Bias is Out author: announcement study of the Times has generated considerable controversy, with New York Times Public Editor Dan Okrent's column in the paper last Sunday referring readers to the organization's website -- http://www.ifamericansknew.org -- to look into the matter for themselves.

The new study to be released on Monday analyzes two-years of coverage on ABC, CBS, and NBC evening news programs. In addition, the report will contain previously unreleased information regarding Associated Press coverage of this conflict.

If Americans Knew Executive Director Alison Weir, who will be presenting the findings, says that these reports should serve as a wake-up call to the American public. "By looking at this coverage statistically, choosing clear, objective categories, we have found an extremely useful, non-subjective tool for measuring the accuracy of media coverage on this extremely important issue. Our findings are highly disturbing. Full and fair reporting on the Israel-Palestine conflict and the ongoing peace process is absolutely necessary if the United States is to act as an honest broker Damning New Study Of US Media Pro-Israel Bias Due

WHAT: Explosive New Study on TV News Coverage of Israel- Palestine to be Released on Capitol Hill Monday

WHEN: Monday, May 9, 10 a.m.m-12 noon

WHERE: Rayburn House Office Building Room 2226, Washington, DC

An explosive new study of American television coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be released at a Capitol Hill briefing on Monday, May 9. The study is a follow-up to a similar report released two weeks ago on The New York Times, which found the Times reported Israeli deaths at rates up to seven to ten times greater than Palestinian fatalities.

The studies are produced by If Americans Knew, a California nonprofit media watchdog organization. Its study of the Times has generated considerable controversy, with New York Times Public Editor Dan Okrent's column in the paper last Sunday referring readers to the organization's website -- http://www.ifamericansknew.org -- to look into the matter for themselves.

Our findings are highly disturbing. Full and fair reporting on the Israel-Palestine conflict and the ongoing peace process is absolutely necessary if the United States is to act as an honest broker."

Ambassador Edward Peck, former chief of mission to Iraq, will introduce the briefing, the 11th in the series of public hearings on the Middle East sponsored by the Council for the National Interest in the last year.

WE'RE NUMBER 24!! U.S. is ranked 24th in freedom of the press,.... http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2005/05/316832.shtml

add a comment on this article Measuring "free press" 08.May.2005 06:23 Mike stepbystpefarm mtdata.com link

Well it depends upon your definition of "free press" doesn't it.

For example, this article discusses "fairness" in reporting. Now is a requirement of a "free press" that it be FAIR? That it give equal time to other people's version of the truth? I guess that means if "The Daily Worker" is required to give equal space to the capitalist point of view we have a freer press. Or is what we mean by a "free press" that anybody is allowed to publish THEIR version of truth, without interference or application of standards of "official truth".

The article argues that our media is mnot "free" because too many "Zionists" are out there epxressing THEIR version of truth. But funny, I don't seem to have noticed any charges that the "Zionists" were doing anything to PREVENT anybody else from publishing "truth". I would say that if you want other versions of "truth" published, then get out there and publish this "truth" yourself. Object to lack of "freedom of the press" if your are being prevented from doing so and not just because you can't find existing publishers who are interested in doing so.

I mean after all, "The New York Times" being criticised for being too pro-"Zionist". Ask yourself, what city is this a paper of? What percentage of NYT subscribers are "Zionists"? What would you expect these subscribers to want to see covered? How?

Free Press being fair as a 'requirement'? 08.May.2005 15:19 Power Trip link

No, a free press is under no such "requirement" to be fair, it is a matter of ethics and telling ones readers the truth rather than playing to a select racism of a certain audience. If it were a "requirement" to be fair, the mainstream media would have a hard time selling out to the drug companies, etc., like they do every day. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the bias of the US news media being pointed out, not required, but very, very necessary!

How can anyone doubt the obvious bias 08.May.2005 18:26 JT link

The amount of atrocities committed by Israelis are NEVER reported by the US main stream media. If an Arab/Muslim as much as coughs, it's headline news. The 16,000 Egypyians, executed by Israel, who's bodies were found in a mass grave recently, was not reported in any paper or television. The Israelis captured setting up fake "Al Qaeda" cells in Palestine were never reported to Americans. It seems the bias US media's only agenda is to report "Arabs/Muslims are bad and Israelis/Jews are good".

Any bets the report will on A25-26 of the Washington Post? Abe's quick to the punch...

Letters to the Editor The New York Times April 28, 2005

To the Editor:

It is ironic that in the Public Editor's column on the subject of balanced coverage of the Arab-Israeli conflict, Daniel Okrent, early in the article, manifests the very bias that he is writing about ("The Hottest Button: How the Times Covers Israel and Palestine," April 24).

In citing two organizations, he characterizes Partners for Peace as one that seeks "to end the occupation of the Palestinian territories," but refers to the other, the Committee for Accurate Middle East Reporting in America, "as a muscular pro-Zionist media monitor." Herein lies the very problem that Okrent is trying to comment on. The pro-Palestinian group is referred to in a non-judgmental way, whereas the pro-Israel group is referred to as pro-Zionist (which in some circles has acquired unjustly a pejorative meaning) instead of the direct "pro-Israel" and is characterized as "muscular," conjuring up the alleged power of the "Jewish lobby."

This being said, I couldn't agree more with Okrent in his condemnation of those who accuse the Times of anti-Semitism because of its Middle East coverage. While I have raised many concerns about specific issues of coverage in the Times, they do not warrant the charge of anti-Semitism, which is indeed a debasement of the term and unworthy of our community.

Sincerely,

Abraham H. Foxman National Director

Roger, Commodore!

Well this isn't true. Israel atrocities are occationaly reported, to maintain a veneer of "fair and balanced" I have to suppose.

Mr Sulzberger, owner of the Times, is not an anti-semite,and his newspaper is not anti-semitic, I agree.
