The purpose of this thread is to applaud our hosts for this place, and what we like about it. One of the things I do not like about modern USA culture is that people do not properly thank others. It's as if they believe they're giving up something to acknowledge that someone else did something nice. Running a site is a royal pain in the ass, and time consuming. It costs something to run, and someone has to pay that. So thank you to the owners, and here's what I like about Freedom4um: 1. No smilies!! I hate those things. I can barely stand to read DU because there are so many people who use them. Why not crayons? 2. No threads calling for government to FIX whatever today's most visible problem is. What are your favorite things about Freedom4um and how it is run?

The web is dead. Been dead for a long time. I like seeing some of the old names and faces who saw what might have been, back in the late 90s, when there was still reason for optimism. I've also met a couple of new folks (granted on LP but they migrated here) who, should they stick with this format, and this format is dying a slow death of attrition thanks to Blogs, will be great posters down the line.
The main thing is that people with very different political views can talk rationally without being called commie or nazi. When someone goes beyond the pale, the posters tend to quash it, rather than calling for banning. The main thing is that here you can see beyond partisan politics and understand that people with very different views can agree on most things. And unite when there is a real threat to the country, as is the case with the Bush administration. I used to post mainly at Bartcop and later DU. I now mainly post here because I see thoughtful responses most of the time. Well, except for Flintlock. And no, Flintlock, I am not interested in your sister.
smirkco has done more to bring thinking people of all stripes together than anything I've ever seen.

Just for the record, I'm perfectly content with my 15 post limit (keeps me from wasting too much time) and there has been no censorship of my posts other than my VOLUNTEERING not to call folks KOOKS and the censorship imposed by folks who bozo'd themselves to avoid facing the facts contained in my posts. ROTFLOL! No, SKYDRIFTER, I'm still around. In fact, I just got done thoroughly demolishing a claim by Kamala about FDS and did you notice that no one has even attempted a rational response to my destruction of nolu_chan's and roughrider's posts yesterday regarding the WTC? Well that depends on which side of the issue you are on. There's been many a thread where it was me against THEM. But who's complaining. (wink) I like that aspect of 4um too! ROTFLOL! Except in my case? ROTFLOL!

I agree that the 'no smileys' is a big plus. Another plus is the 'no breaking news' section. Sites like LP have people arguing a lot about what is and what is not 'breaking news' instead of having some more interesting discussions. I also like that there is not explicit prohibition of 'racism' or 'anti-semitism'. People are what they are and they think what they think. If a site is to tolerate those who pray that 'we' nuke various 'Mooslum' countries then there's nothing wrong with a little racism or anti-semitism. I'm a confessed anti-Bulgarian and I'd feel embarrassed to see that no one cares about my Bulgarian bashing while those who warn us about various Jews conspiracies are supressed. Another thing that I like is the 'ignore' feature. I'm glad it's there even though the level of discussion here is civilized enough not to make me ignore anyone. So, I too thank the owner for keeping this good site alive.

Oh, there is one thing that I don't like. It is allowing the members to include large, psychedelic graphics as part of their signature. This can be very distracting and extremely annoying when someone makes 15 posts on a thread and drops these redundant nonsense to no one's benefit or pleasure. There was someone at FR, I believe, who was including the head of a feline with huge canines in all of his posts. Even though his graphics were not animated, it was quite pathetic and gratuitous. Also, adding a 10-line SIG to a 2-word post... not good.

I hate signatures. Is there a way to opt out of seeing them? It's not the content, it's the repetition. But to each his own. I have high tolerance for those kind of annoyances. It's the prohibitions on free thought and expression that trouble me at most message boards. I'm not crazy about puking smilies, either. At DU they have a bunch of people that use that smilie to express their displeasure. I call them cyber bulimics.

That was "Sabertooth." He was actually very good on the immigration issue, in that he stood up tenaciously and articulately against the "party line" that JimRob wanted enforced there for so long: "open borders" in all but name. He was repeatedly and gratuitously banned at FR, until he finally came over to LP. As has baffled me before with other posters, he changed stripes, as it were, and became an acerbic defender of Israel against all the "Stormtroopers" (i.e., people who question even timidly any of Israel's policies or actions) supposedly there. I tuned him out after that---I can have my pick of Israel Firsters anywhere on the 'net.

Indeed you can disable the display of taglines (signatures). Click on "setup" and the top of the screen and unselect "View tag lines of other posters.". Poof...their gone!
