A group of Mohawk Indians have cut off a major Canadian rail link in a dispute over land. The protesters parked a bus over tracks on the line between the cities of Toronto and Ottawa. Fire crews and police are at the site, which the Mohawks say they intend to occupy for 48 hours. The national rail company says it has a court order to break up the protest. But in the meantime it has had to use buses to transport its passengers. The demonstrators set up a camp and lit a fire. They say they want the provincial government to close a gravel quarry which they say is on Mohawk land. Protest leader Shawn Brant said their action was an attempt to speed up negotiations on the dispute. 'Not sanctioned' "It is one that has come out of frustration. There are no other avenues to pursue," he said. Canadian National Railway said it runs 25 freight trains and 22 passenger trains a day on the track. "Clearly this is a very significant issue for CN," spokesman Mark Hallman said. The official Mohawk council said it did not sanction the protest. "We're disappointed that some of our members have taken matters into their own hands," Donald Maracle, chief of the Bay of Quinte Mohawks, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

A ragtag bunch of folks like us blocking a railroad would be tazered, pepper sprayed, beaten up and hauled off to jail in about 3 minutes. Yet these folks are unmolested. Intriguing.

The myth: The Noble Savage The reality: Still hadn't discovered the wheel. No written language. Unspeakable atrocities. And did I mention Euros beat them here? There's no doubt the Indians got screwed here in America by our conquest, but these little fits of sovereignty deserve a beatdown.
A friend of mine went to Montana for a guided hunt and one of the residents "offered" to take six blacks for every one Indian the state was relieved of, because even a minor fender bender was a federal case if it involved an Indian. Former Secretary Of The Interior James G. Watt said that the reservations should be abolished. He resented their whiney, liquor-soaked "sovereignty" too. Although Watt was no doubt thinking only of himself and the added inconvenience of dealing with Indians and reservations, and of course the whole of the govt despises a sovereign nation that is immune to IRS bullying and federal excise taxes and regulation on cigarettes, liquor and gambling, it does appear that preserving Native-American culture is only for the purpose of dividing millions of dollars. Recently a tribe voted not to recognize the claims of some Southern mixed blood blacks because they didn't want to divide the pie to include the "new" descendants. (It came out to something like 18 million instead of 40 mil per-the numbers may be wrong but they were still obscenely wealthy either way) If not for the money the tribal council would probably have welcomed the additional members.
I don't have a problem with Whites nor do I consider Indians noble savages. I have a problem with AMERICANS of ALL COLORS. Lastly, I am not Canadian and I will not interfere. Remember that asshat Americans? When you did not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries?

There's no doubt the Indians got screwed here in America by our conquest, but these little fits of sovereignty deserve a beatdown.
