Two Badly Burnt Bodies Found in Northern Mexico

The Associated Press
Published: May 9, 2005

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) - The bodies of two men who had been set on fire were found in separate locations south of this industrial city, police said Monday.

The lifeless body of the first victim was still burning when police found it late Sunday about 15 yards from a highway near the town of Garcia, 30 miles (45 kilometers) south of Monterrey. Assailants doused the victim's face and chest with gasoline and set him ablaze, authorities said.

Whether or not the victim was dead before being set ablaze could not be determined, according to Jorge Cantu, a spokesman for the attorney general's office of Nuevo Leon state, which includes Monterrey.

A state highway policeman found the second body Monday, inside the trunk of a car that had been set ablaze and abandoned more than 2 miles (4 kilometers) from where the first victim was found, police said.

Local media reported the man's hands and feet were bound, telltale sings that the killing was drug-related. In the second case, it was also unclear if the victim has been burned alive.

Investigators haven't identified the men and are still trying to determine whether the two killings were related, Cantu said.

"The bodies are so badly burned that it has been hard to even establish how they were killed," he said.
