BERLIN (Reuters) - A pregnant cow being chased by police and fire fighters caused 25,000 euros ($33,900) of damage on a three-hour rampage through the German city of Hanover.

Uschi escaped from a farm late Monday and became increasingly violent as she encountered shocked drivers and pedestrians in the city.

Pursued by the farmer, television camera crews and 30 police and fire fighters, the Charolais cow lashed out at cars, benches, garden fences and whatever else got in her way during the 5-km chase, authorities said.

After more than three hours on the loose, Uschi was brought down by tranquilizer darts, without harming her unborn calf, fire services spokesman Martin Argendorf said Tuesday.

"She probably won't remember any of it when she wakes up again. But the farmer will, because he's going to have to pay damages of about 25,000 euros," he said.

Holy shit, that reminds me of pulling calves this time of year, as the cows start giving birth. You'll see one with a calf leg sticking out her rear, and you have to chase her down and pull the calf, or it might die, she might injure it, or both might die. There's even a jack you can use to pull them if two guys can't pull the calf out.

Pulling calves and pulling foals. That's hard work.

Uschi night on the town.

Farm life is hard HARD work - long hours, very little pay and no respect from anyone.

As a kid I used to work on local farms when there still were some and when it was still legal for American kids to go out in the fields. That pretty much ended in the mid-1980s.

The last local farm here was razed about a decade ago to make way for a light rail depot here as the city came, engulfed the area, and moved on. I went from clearing brush and helping with the harvest to doing Spanish translation in high school when the labor force shifted from local kids to almost 100% migrant workers and the labor laws changed to kick the local kids out of that kind of work.

These days, all the little local family farms are gone. Now its just hobby farms for yuppies on 2 acres or so within a 10 mile radius in between massive housing developments. The closest 'decently sized' farm is 45min to an hour away.

I fear for any kids I might have. They won't know what its like to get up early in the morning, bust their butts for 12-16 hours and then collapse in a heap just to get up and do it again the next day. They won't know what its like to do 'pest control' spending a day chasing down coyotes and beavers, nor will they know how to repair anything or how animals (besides dogs and cats) live. They won't have any appreciation for what it takes to grow food and get it to the dinner table -- and that is NOT a good thing.

Good stuff.

Memories from early childhood....

*Gathering eggs from the chicken coops

*Watching the men folk wring chicken's necks

*Watching the men folk slaughtering a hog and dressing it

*Getting chased by my granny's rooster

*Getting milk shot in my mouth from the cow's teat

*Watching my great grandma churn butter

I always hated baling hay, and would take a beating before doing it again.

I've slaughtered more animals than I can count - mainly cows and pigs, and dressed many others - mainly deer. Made a ton of link sausage and a ton of chili. Boned many a beef rib cage. I butchered throughout high school.
