Let's see who can come up with the most interesting or comical rebuttals to the following:

Well... maybe starting the war in Iraq was a mistake but... now that we're there...

Yes, entering the country illegally is... well... illegal but... now that they are here...

These are the standard idiot talking points in support of continuing the Iraqi war and accepting the reality of tens of millions of Third World illegals in the country.

"well... he did rape her and he did keep her locked up in the basement for 10 years but... now that they've been living together for all this time..."

"yes, after we burned their house and killed their children, we did learn that they were innocent but... now that we are sitting on the smoking ruins... shouldn't we finish the job and kill them all?"

That's the mentality I'm hearing, but it's couched in words like "reconstruction".

Other popular talking points:

Even if the war was started on false premises and no one can explain why we should continue the occupation, it would make the sacrifice of those who fought in this war and died seem to be meaningless so more should die to give a meaning to the deaths of those who died before them. The Pentagon just announced the death of 9 more young Americans in Iraq.

"Yes, driving drunk was a crime and a bad idea, but since we hit those people, we might as well drag the survivors out of their car and finish the job!"

That's an unspoken, almost taboo, underlying message. Maybe we should look at examples in history of important retreats, that saved a civilization.

But, as long as we're here, we need to stay and finish the job...

We need to help them find a way out of the morass. And we can't do that w/o understanding how they think.

The thing is that invading Iraq was a mistake if not a crime backed by a lie. No one disputes it, except for a few leftover kooks. Once we established that the invasion was a mistake, the number one goal should be to undo the mistake not to take advantage of the fact that 'we are there' and attempt to get some 'good things' done. Yes, people died and they've been put in harm's way by their reckless leaders. The leaders need to pay for this, not be kept as leaders who continue to have the power to send more people to die there.
