Back in the middle '80's there was a movie called "Miracle Mile," about the world ending in a day. It was an interesting take on what most people would do.

What would you do if you knew the world was going to end in 24 hours?

Myself, I'd get a bottle of good brandy, a box of fine cigars, and take my rocking chair out to a deserted lake, put it under a shade tree, and smoke and drink until it ended.

Some hash and opium would be nice, too.

No, this isn't if only you had one day to live. It's if the world ended in one day. Revenge wouldn't mean anything, since they'll be dead, too.

As long as a certain fat, snarling nazi went to the grave first, I'd die happy. But if that violates the rules, I guess Halle Berry and a bottle of 60-year-old Scotch would do.

You're wrong about that; my daughter would be dead too. You simply don't have much of a stake in the future, either way.

That movie terrified me and made me cry.

If I had one day before it all came to an end I would want to talk and spend time with a very interesting person.

I should add a spiritually wise and comforting type of person.

I'd like to have with me a bottle of tranquilizers and some of those old-fashioned barbituates they had in the 1940s that knocked people out, and I'd take a bunch of all those right before we all have to die.

I'd go pick up my kid, and her mother, since her mother probably would want to spend the last day with the kid too, and go sit on the shore of a nice little lake and catch some pickerel.

I would first send out an email to lots of people I have known and tell them I love them and how much I appreciate their part in my life.

then I'd buy a few bottles of the expensive kind of wine I normally figure I can't afford. I'd give up the battle to quit smoking and make sure I had cigarettes. I haven't smoked pot in decades but if I could score some I would.

I'd drive to the beach with my husband and daughter, sit on a blanket and watch the waves while I enjoyed the wine. I'd call the people for whom an email wouldn't do. I'd enjoy the knowledge that I didn't have to go back to work, I didn't have to protest the war or even worry about politics any more. I'd be amazed at the beauty and size of the ocean and reflect on how, all in all, life here and now has been more than ok, actually pretty good. I'd hope I had made a positive difference.

Great minds...I once told my wife that if I heard the Soviet missles were heading over the North Pole, destination USA; I would head for the liquor store with the first decent woman I could get my hands on...she didn't let me out of sight much after that.

You wouldn't need them. I'd hold your hand and share my opium/hash with you. It'd be all you needed.

I forgot, I'd have to take my pug, Norman, with me. He wouldn't know what was going to happen, but I wouldn't want to leave him by his self.

Miracle Mile was a strange, rather depressing film, but oddly enough I found the ending uplifting. It showed humanity was going to survive, even if the characters did not. And it made me laugh that they headed into the tarpits at the end, the implicatioin being in 10,000 years humanity would dig them up, along with a wooly mammoth underneath them, and wonder what the hell happened, that caused a helicopter with four perfectly preserved people to sink in the tar.
