NEW YORK (Reuters) - Tammy Faye Bakker, the disgraced televangelist whose reputations was rehabilitated through a documentary and reality show, has penned a goodbye letter to her fans in which she says doctors have stopped treating her cancer.

"The doctors have stopped trying to treat the cancer and so now it's up to God and my faith. And that's enough! But please continue to pray for the pain and sick stomach," Tammy Faye wrote in a letter to her "faithful friends" on her Web site.

"My precious daughter, Tammy Sue, and her wonderful friends are staying with me," Tammy Faye wrote. "They don't want me falling down the stairs. I am down weight wise to 65 pounds, and look like a scarecrow. I need God's miracle to swallow."

In 1996 Tammy Faye was diagnosed with colon cancer. In 2004 she learned the cancer had returned, this time in her lungs.

Tammy Faye and her husband, Jim, were household names in the United States, with a television evangelical empire that brought in close to an estimated $130 million annually at its height in the 1980s and reached 13 million homes daily.

Tammy Faye's face was one of the most recognized on American television, the mascara running riot as she tearfully beseeched viewers to open their hearts to Jesus -- and their wallets to the Bakkers' causes.

It all came crashing down amid sex and financial scandals that landed Jim in prison for five years. Tammy Faye divorced Jim and married his best friend.

In 2000, a critically acclaimed documentary about her life, "The Eyes of Tammy Faye," was released and did much to rehabilitate her image. Then in 2004 Tammy Faye appeared on the cult reality show "The Surreal Life," where she lived in a house alongside such other "celebrities" as porn star Ron Jeremy and rapper Vanilla Ice, winning over the audience and fellow cast mates with her warmth and humor.

oh my. i didn't know she was dx'ed with colon cancer and now lung cancer. if she's only 65 lbs, she doesn't have much longer to live. sorry to see her suffering this way.

Me too. It struck a cord as that is about how much my Mom weighed when she died of cancer 1 April, 2003. My sister died a year later and didn't weigh much more.

I wish Tammy Faye Bakker the best, in spite of having a great deal of animosity toward them during the height of her popularity with her ex.

Ye gads. This scourge is everywhere, and I am CONVINCED 'they' are not seeking a cure; but are rather perpetuating a money-making industry.

Since my wife has been ill; many of her friends have been bringing over 'perpared meals' for us to eat. (Like I can't cook, or something...) I was getting ready to slide a hash brown casserole into the oven, when I read this. The container was one of those 'GLAD' affairs, and I was reminded of the effect heating such trays had on the food it contained. I slopped it out into a glass dish before throwing it into the oven. Hell...who knows?

good move. Limit your exposure to plastics. And don't microwave with them or saran wrap on food.

Who knows is right.

I know a lot of people mock her.. but she's had a lot of hardship dealing with a loony husband.. this is so terribly sad.

I visited my grandparents last weekend, Mamaw can't weigh more than 85, and Papaw looks like he's down to about 120, tops. Mamaw is starting to lose her memory and faculties in general, but Papaw still mows his own yard at 89 years old. What a crazy family I was born into! :)

I've not read the Tammy Faye story from cover to cover, but it seems she was less than lords-little-angel herself. And a scold, that's what set me off!

Someone dying in pain is no one to make fun of.

However given her high visibility on TBN for so many years, I couldn't help but think that if she applied her usual amount of makeup she might weigh-in at 100 lbs.

I will never forget a funding drive she had once, trying to send Barbie looking dolls to some starving African children.

An unlikely friendship...

The Porn Star and the Evangelist

The adult film star talks about his unlikely friendship with Christian preacher Tammy Faye Messner. By Ron Jeremy

Print Page

Of all the friends I made on The Surreal Life, I probably had the best connection with Tammy Faye. Which was ironic, because we were the two people nobody expected to get along. She was an evangelist preacher and orthodox Christian, and I was a porn star. Not exactly a match made in heaven. But Tammy and I bonded. She recognized that I wasn't such a bad guy after all, and though she never approved of my line of work, she respected me and always treated me fairly. She even told Larry King and other interviews how much she liked me (and my pet turtle). When I brought Rick James on the show (one of his last public appearances before his untimely death), it was as a gift to Rob [Van Winkle, better known as Vanilla Ice], who was a longtime fan. What TV viewers never got to see was Rick singing and playing the acoustic guitar. For some reason, WB never used this footage. He sounded so good, Tammy Faye got out of bed (it was late at night), and joined the rest of the cast on the couch, to hear him sing. I think she even sang with him. A really great moment.

Tammy and I kept in contact after The Surreal Life ended. I even arranged for a reconciliatory phone call between her and her one-time nemesis, Jessica Hahn. Jessica, as you may remember, was the one-time church secretary who slept with Tammy's former husband, PTL televangelist Jimmy Bakker. For years, Tammy partially blamed Jessica for destroying her marriage, and they had a fued in the media. But the dust had settled, and both women were ready to speak to each other at last.

All they needed was a push in the right direction from a friend.*
