Organic Bees Are Thriving - While commercial bee populations are plummeting

http://Infowars.net | May 11, 2007

Over the past few weeks we have highlighted reports that suggest bee populations are declining at rates of up to 80% in areas of the U.S. and Europe. Experts are calling the worrying trend "colony collapse disorder" or CCD.

While no one can pin point the exact reason as to why bees are declining so rapidly it is interesting to note that no organic bee keepers are reporting losses.

A recent report at sci-tech website http://redicecreations.com cites a statement from longtime environmental activist and part-time organic beekeeper Sharon Labchuk from Prince Edward Island who states:

I'm on an organic beekeeping list of about 1,000 people, mostly Americans, and no one in the organic beekeeping world, including commercial beekeepers, is reporting colony collapse on this list. The problem with the big commercial guys is that they put pesticides in their hives to fumigate for varroa mites, and they feed antibiotics to the bees. They also haul the hives by truck all over the place to make more money with pollination services, which stresses the colonies. Labchuk has twice run for a seat in Ottawa's House of Commons, making strong showings around 5% for Canada's fledgling Green Party. She is also leader of the provincial wing of her party. She is adamant that it is the rigors of the commercial agricultural industry that are wiping out bee populations.

The alarming decline in bee populations across the United States and Europe represents a potential ecological apocalypse, an environmental catastrophe that could collapse the food chain and wipe out humanity. Who and what is behind this flagrant abuse of the eco-system?

Scientists are thus far stumped as to what is causing the decline, ruling out parasites but leaning towards some kind of new toxin or chemical used in agriculture as being responsible. "Experts believe that the large-scale use of genetically modified plants in the US could be a factor," reports Germany's Spiegal Online . (1 image)

there is in fact some evidence (we've read it here on 4um) that the genetically modified grain could be the culprit in killing the bees. you'd think the government wouldn't allow any modifications to the environment that could cause such a reaction. I mean if you thought a particular food might kill you, then would you eat it? Yet the government allows things introduced into the natural environment (GM food) that might kill the environment.

I had no idea that there was inorganic beekeeping.

I had no idea that there was inorganic beekeeping.

This was posted earlier, but it included a note about the natural size of the honeycomb cells that hatch new bees being some 4.6 mm, and the beekeepers that think they are smarter than God made theirs some 5.4 mm. (not certain on exact sizes). The result was larger bees in the range of 50%, but it also made the bees more prone to mites and viruses.

I've just sent an inquiry to the largest organic beekeeping outfit in the country, Y.S. Organics. We'll see what kind of response I get from them.

This news on bees makes me want to start an organic beekeeping hobby.

Natural raw honey is supposed to be very healthy stuff too (babies under 1-2 years excepted).

I still haven't found a local source for honey. It is great to fight off pollen allergies.
