Tucker: Active-Duty Generals Will ‘Revolt’ Against Bush If He Maintains Escalation Into 2008

Appearing on NBC’s Chris Matthews Show this morning, Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Cynthia Tucker revealed that sources within the military are warning of “a revolt from active-duty generals if September rolls around and the president is sticking with the surge into ‘08.” Watch it:

Noting that retired generals such as Gen. John Batiste have already begun voicing their discontent with the president’s strategy in Iraq, Tucker added that the generals “don’t want to fall by the wayside like the generals in Vietnam did, kept pushing a war that they knew was lost.”

When President Bush vetoed the Iraq timeline legislation earlier this month, he claimed that “the measure would ‘impose impossible conditions on our commanders in combat’ by forcing them to ‘take fighting directions from politicians 6,000 miles away in Washington, DC.’”

But despite past claims that “the right force level” will be determined by “the sober judgement of our military leaders,” the Bush administration has a proven track record of disregarding the advice of military leaders. As recently as last December, when the White House was first pushing its escalation plan, the administration explicitly ignored “the unanimous disagreement of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.”

It appears the commanders on the ground in Iraq are getting tired of “taking fighting directions” from a politician “6,000 miles away” in the White House. And they might not stay quiet for long.

Digg It!

Transcript:

TUCKER: Look for a revolt from active-duty generals if September rolls around and the president is sticking with the surge into ‘08. We’ve already heard from retired generals. But my Atlanta Journal-Constitution colleague Jay Bookman has lots of sources among currently serving military officers who don’t want to fall by the wayside like the generals in Vietnam did, kept pushing a war that they knew was lost.

Never mind that Bush has said the Iraqis will be in control of all Iraqi provinces by November.

The important thing for a liberal like Tucker is to plant the seeds of hysteria.

Recall that she insisted Bush had a secret plan to reinstate the draft.

Recall that she argues democRATS did not commit voter fraud in 2004.

Recall that she's against immigration reform. (And claims that has nothing to do with the way they vote.)

Recall that she endorsed Cynthia McKinney, even though she'd previously written scathing articles on her (and has since ... in fact, McKinney sued her for libel). Maybe the endorsement had something to do with the fact that McKinny was the democRAT candidate in the race and every liberal knows (and believe me, Tucker is a liberal) that even the worst democRAT is better than the best republican.

Recall that back in 2002 she said the resolution the UN passed giving Saddam "one last chance to come clean" was "the best news we've heard since the Bush administration started this campaign against Saddam Hussein." And that she recognized that the "resolution does not tie the hands of the Bush administration. They can still go ahead and invade, even as the Security Council is debating if, in fact, Saddam Hussein tries to delay or put off the inspections in any way." And that's exactly what Saddam did. But how times change. Now she says "Mr. Bush took the nation to war on a web of lies". And not only misrepresents but lies about the facts in her columns to try and *prove* the claim.

But I'll say one thing for Cynthia Tucker. Despite being a Clinton supporter, she at least called for the resignation of Clinton in December 1998 when it became clear he did have an affair and perjured himself about it. But then she turned around and called for a dismissal of the charges as the impeachment trial began just because they weren't going to get 67 votes for impeachment. (And why not? Because democRATS were going to vote not their conscience ... not the law ... not the truth ... not right and wrong ... not the Constitution ... but their party.) And she didn't utter a word of condemnation about that. No, she said it was time to move one ... "In fact, I don't think the matter should have ever gotten this far." She didn't even want to hear the witnesses. She agreed that Clinton didn't tell the truth but she wanted to move on. And then she predicted that the impeachment was going to hurt Republicans in 2000. She said, based on her *sources*, "I think that Republicans will find themselves in trouble in the year 2000."

And now she could be a problem for Hillary ... especially with Obama in the race.

Noting that retired generals such as Gen. John Batiste have already begun voicing their discontent with the president’s strategy in Iraq, Tucker added that the generals “don’t want to fall by the wayside like the generals in Vietnam did, kept pushing a war that they knew was lost.”

The problem with Ms Tucker is that she doesn't want to report the news.

As editorial page editor she wants to make it.

She want's to influence it.

So she has to introduce here own preconceived notions as if they were facts.

I'll use statements that she's made recently to show what I mean.

"There is no chance for 'victory' or 'success' in Iraq at this late date"

"There is no 'way forward'."

"We cannot fix the mess we've made."

She's may be al-Qaeda's best 5th columnist.

The problem with liberals like Cynthia is they are "fixated on losing."

Fixated On Losing

By INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY | Posted Friday, May 11, 2007 4:20 PM PT

War On Terrorism: Thousands of active members of the military sign a letter urging Congress to support the mission in Iraq. But the media, focused on anything that'll make the war look bad, just yawn.

Let anyone who ever wore the uniform voice concern about the war, and the media are immediately interested. How many rent-a-generals, for instance, have we seen, heard from or read about in the last four years who've been critical of our involvement and/or performance in Iraq?

On the other hand, all we heard was crickets chirping as 2,700 soldiers — all on active duty — signed a petition titled "Appeal for Courage" and presented it last week to Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham and House Minority Leader John Boehner.

"As an American currently serving my nation in uniform," the appeal begins, "I respectfully urge my political leaders in Congress to fully support our mission in Iraq and halt any calls for retreat.

"I also respectfully urge my political leaders to actively oppose media efforts which embolden my enemy while demoralizing American support at home. The War in Iraq is a necessary and just effort to bring freedom to the Middle East and protect America from further attack."

Behind the effort are Navy Lt. Jason Nichols and Minnesota National Guard Staff Sgt. David Thul. These aren't new enlistees on latrine duty in the States. They're right in the middle of the action in Iraq — Nichols in Baghdad and Thul conducting convoy operations with the 34th Infantry Division.

Wednesday's presentation was held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars headquarters in Washington, D.C. The VFW happens to be the largest group of combat veterans in the country, and its headquarters is within a laptop's toss of hundreds, maybe thousands, of journalists.

Yet not one of them bothers to show up. They're obviously too busy doting on http://VoteVets.org, a group linked to http://MoveOn.org, the Bush-hating, anti-war organization that was founded by leftist George Soros, is adored by Democrats and will no doubt find favor with any military-related group or person in favor of surrender in Iraq.

The Army Times reports that roughly 60% of the 2,700 soldiers "are serving or have served in Iraq, with about two-thirds enlisted members and one-third officers." The signatures were gathered in the space of a month, less time than it took to get far fewer signatures on a petition asking Congress to promptly pull out of the Iraq War.

"Staying in Iraq will not work and is not worth the price," says the Appeal for Redress. "It is time for U.S. troops to come home." Some 1,000 soldiers signed the Appeal for Redress before it was presented to Congress in January, and 900 more have affixed their signatures since.

Despite the difference in numbers, the Appeal for Redress has received the sort of favorable mainstream media coverage that has been denied to the Appeal for Courage.

None of this is surprising. The establishment media simply aren't as interested in stories that tell of support for the war or of positive developments from the front.

They have another election to win next year.

I've learned to never mind anything BAC says, but I am extra curious about the threads he decides to post spin.

Could it be that whatever defense contractor pays for BAC's efforts is worried about this threat of a military revolt?

Isn't right before midnight an extremely unusual time for BAC to post?

To reason, indeed, he was not in the habit of attending. His mode of arguing, if it is to be so called, was one not uncommon among dull and stubborn persons, who are accustomed to be surrounded by their inferiors. He asserted a proposition; and, as often as wiser people ventured respectfully to show that it was erroneous, he asserted it again, in exactly the same words, and conceived that, by doing so, he at once disposed of all objections. - Macaulay, "History of England," Vol. 1, Chapter 6, on James II.

It's possible. This is one of BAC's poorest attacks, perhaps he jumped in without waiting for backup.
As usual he ignores the factual references in the article; generals who have recently voiced their unease and discontent.
Cynthia Tucker also gives a reasonable self-serving explanation - they “don’t want to fall by the wayside like the generals in Vietnam did, kept pushing a war that they knew was lost.”
