Gun giveaway thumbs nose at NYC mayor By c, Associated Press Writer 28 minutes ago

ANNANDALE, Va. - Openly armed firearms enthusiasts packed a normally sedate government building, hoping to win a pistol or rifle and at the same time send a defiant message to gun-control advocates, especially New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The Virginia Citizens Defense League, a gun-rights group, organized the "Bloomberg Gun Giveaway" in large part to thumb its nose at Bloomberg, who accuses some shops of allowing illegal purchases of firearms that later were used in crimes in his city.

The city has filed federal lawsuits against more than two dozen shops, including six in Virginia.

Two guns were awarded Thursday, a Para-Ordnance pistol and a Varmint Stalker rifle, each worth about $900. The winners did not immediately receive the weapons — they will still be required to undergo federal and state background checks.

The first winner, Jay Minsky, responded with an obscene hand gesture when asked what message he hoped to send to Bloomberg.

"If he doesn't like people in New York having guns, he should deal with New York," said Minsky, who grew up in Brooklyn. "Just keep out of Virginia."

The event drew an overflow crowd at a Fairfax County government building, with the fire marshal aggressively enforcing an occupancy limit of 150 for the meeting hall. Others stood outside and peered through open windows. About 200 people showed.

County officials opposed the drawing but concluded they could not prohibit a group from using the community meeting room because of its political views. The gun-rights group has met in the building for years.

The event drew protests from gun-control advocates and the parents of those killed in last month's shootings at Virginia Tech.

Peter and Cathy Read, whose daughter Mary was one of those killed, held a photo of their daughter outside the building.

"We're not here to have a debate. We're here to witness for our daughter," Peter Read said. "The victims need to be witnessed to. People of the commonwealth can make intelligent decisions about what's right."

Philip Van Cleave, the league's president, said he sympathizes with the families but maintained that some of the deaths might have been prevented if somebody had been armed.

Many in attendance said they were motivated not by the chance of a free gun, but to make a point to Bloomberg and express support for the Second Amendment.

"It'd be nice if I win, but that's not what this is about. It's about my constitutional right to defend myself," said Ron Stuebing, a league member.

The event had been planned for months as a fundraiser for two gun shops being sued by New York City. But officials said that giveaway violated state gambling laws, so the league quickly organized a new giveaway, open to anybody who showed up at its Thursday night meeting.

Most but not all in attendance carried holstered handguns. In Virginia, individuals need a permit only to carry a concealed weapon. Openly visible, holstered guns are permitted without a permit.

Anybody who showed up at Thursday's event was eligible for the drawing — except Bloomberg and his immediate family.

Asked Thursday about the giveaway, Bloomberg said, "I think it's sick, is the nicest ways to phrase it."

Van Cleave responded that the members of his organization are law-abiding citizens, including many retired military, police officers and firefighters.

"If you're saying these are sick people, then I'm proud to be sick," Van Cleave said.

The ruling elite will not rest until they have all the guns.

How does Bloomy look like a 'third party' candidate?

It's interesting. I think Giuliani can't make it through the primary because he got nixed by Dobson. Bloomy, on the other hand, might be able to win a 3-way election if he's willing to spend a billion or 2. And, once he wins, he will claim a mandate to 'pacify' the country by confiscating all private guns after appointing a few SCOTUS judges willing to rule that only the 'well regulated militia' (the National Guard, that is) can have guns.

That is too horrible to even consider.

Bloomberg has only one thing on his side and that is money. It takes pure unadulterated arrogance of the man to believe he can BUY the presidency as he has bought everything else.

The Founding Fathers would be distraught if they could see how this country has degenerated to the bottom of the pit of politics.

I can see 30% of voters approving of a 'no smoking', 'no guns' self-made billionaire. A Bloomberg presidency could turn out even worse than the plagues of Clinton and Bush.

Now, the Demo or GOP alternatives... I must say that Obama seems to be the lesser evil on the Demo side. On the GOP, other than Ron Paul, maybe Romney or whatever his name is would be preferable to the the Bloom - still an evil though.

So... Bloomy/Hagel vs. Romney/Rice vs. Obama/Momma (or Clinton/Obama). Whom would you vote for? Also in the race: Nader/Buchanan.

The first winner, Jay Minsky,

The 1st winner's last name. Sweet irony :)

As I understand Bloomberg’s argument, some guns sold legally in VA were used in NYC to commit crimes so his answer is to close down the supply. Can the same argument be made about the cars the criminals used? Maybe he could mount an effort to shut down Ford or GM?

Yes, all is possible. Except for, let's say, maybe suing Mexico or the Bush gov't for allowing the criminals in the country if the people using the guns to kill their fellow humans were in the country illegally.

He would sue Virginia store keepers for selling guns but he will not go after Mexico or the federal gov't or his own City gov't for allowing the murdering illegals to come in the country and then tolerating their presence there.

That's a good point. This little psycho welcomes "diversity" in the form of illegals so given his own logic, he should be sued by the victims of crimes they commit.

Firstly...Obama was CREATED as a candidate right in front of our eyes.

Obama and Hitlery are being waltzed together, paraded if you will, before the American voters every day. The only two.

What part will Obama play at the end???? If a lock is needed for the black vote, Obama will be VP and then shunted aside later.

Vote for?? I will support Paul, no one else, vote for, I will leave that blank or write Paul in.

I am only comparing them on the 'evil' scale.

Obama, indeed, got his senate seat by defeating Alan Keyes in a 'black vs. black' contest. Now, I don't know why Obama was able to trounce Dr. Keyes but... he did. I guess the GOP wasn't exactly supporting Keyes or not as strongly as the Demos were supporting Obama. I am aware that he has little accomplishments to brag about, other than being black and 'a victim' of his color, family situation and so on.

Is he more evil than Hillary? I don't think so. When compared to the Demo from Delaware (a nut) or Dodd (a drunk) - Obama is 'the lesser evil'. There is some other guy in the Demo race who is totally anti-war. That one would be preferable to Obama but he is not viewed by the MSM as a 'serious' or 'major' candidate.

Obama is useful, thus the millions of dollars he has collected.

Paul is a veteran of the trenches in politics and has received, peanuts.

Lord help this country if something like that ever happens. With more than 60 million guns owners, if even 1% decided they are not going to comply and are willing to use force to put a stop to it, then we are looking at the begnning of a civil war, because that 600k will grow very quickly in number.
