The President’s Job Approval has fallen to the lowest level ever recorded by Rasmussen Reports. Just 34% of American adults now Approve of the way that George W. Just 71% of Republicans now offer their approval. His support among men has fallen to 35%.

The President’s ratings have tumbled each time immigration reform dominates the news. While the President advocates a “comprehensive” reform focused primarily on legalizing the status of illegal aliens, our most recent survey shows that most voters favor an enforcement first policy. Last year, following a nationally televised Presidential Address on immigration, just 39% of Americans agreed with the President’s position.

Most politicians and DC pundits continue to misunderstand the immigration issue. One article today suggests that Republicans oppose “an open, immigrant-friendly society.” In fact, polling consistently shows that most Republicans favor an open and welcoming immigration policy that welcomes all except national security threats, criminals, and those coming to live off the US welfare system. The last time we polled on that question, Republicans favored such a policy by a 56% to 30%. Numbers for Democrats were essentially the same (54% to 29%).

While favoring an immigrant-friendly society, most Americans also favor a society in which the laws are observed by everyone. By a 3-to-1 margin, voters say it doesn’t make sense to consider additional laws until the government first gains control of the borders and enforces existing laws.

Earlier surveys on immigration have found support for building a barrier along the Mexican border and positive attitudes towards citizen patrols along the border. Another survey found that most Americans consider current immigration laws a threat to both national security and the economy. Three-fourths of all Americans believe it is too easy for people from other countries to enter the United States.

Of course, the President’s Job Approval was already low before the immigration issue hit the news. Confidence is also low when it comes to the overall War on Terror. Most Americans believe that history will judge the U.S. mission in Iraq a failure.

What nonsense. There must be only about 10 Republicans left ... or they only polled Freepers ...

The Ras pro-Bush numbers are always a few points higher than what other polls shows but, even when factoring that, it is undeniable that a huge majority of the GOP members continue to worship Bush as their savior.

I disagree with usage of the word "huge" ... GOP membership is sinking like a fat man in quicksand. (Only people similar in nature to an abused spouse remain in the Republican Party. The ones that can't leave even after having been beaten like a step-child for years.)

Republicans are in deep shit, but the country is even worse off because there aren't any legitimate choices, other than Ron Paul, that either Democrat or Republican can make without compromising their own values.

GOP membership is not relevant within the context of the GOP members supporting Bush. It's those who are left there that are going to put forward a GOP prez candidate for 2008. Given that Bush supporters are going to continue to be in the majority inside the GOP, the eventual nominee is unlikely to be a radical departure from Bush. The only unBush currently in the GOP race is Ron Paul. I love him and I am glad he is in the debates but he's not going to be voted for in primaries where 70% or 65% of the voters continue to be Bush supporters.

So, you got a neoBush running in 2008, representing the GOP. The independence slot may be bought by a wealthy Jew with totalitarian leanings. Do you think that the Demos are about to save the day? With Hillary or Obama? Both pro-war, collectivist-socialists, not too different from Bush?

Note that many former Clinton-haters now say that they're missing Clinton today. Many make a case that we'd be better off today if Gore won. Would it be possible that, by 2014, many will wish that W was still on the throne?

This is only true if the internet support does not equate to Paul votes during the primaries, which is a very real probability. From what I can tell, most of his supporters are not registered republicans, so when push comes to shove, their "support" is nothing more than empty words and means nothing.

Paul's team needs to begin asking his supporters to go down to the local court house and register as republicans. It doesn't matter as much for states with open primaries, but it is imperative that this happens in states which have closed primaries.
