We descend from one Samuel Shortridge who fought under Daniel Boone, and managed to survive the Battle of Blue Licks (the Brits were managing Native American forces against the colonists in that battle near the end of the war). He married a cousin of Boone's (Sally Scholl), the relationship is through the Welsh Morgans (Boone's mother), hence the Senator's middle name.
Here's the sort of politics Samuel M. Shortridge was up to, stopping Asians (Japanese) from immigrating into the US back in 1923. Samuel Morgan Shortridge is said to be the tallest man in the Senate. In size, at least, he rises well above his colleague, Hiram W. Johnson. Just at present he seems about to stir up as much trouble for the Administration as the other Californian —but in quite a different way. Senator Shortridge is going to introduce into Congress an amendment to the immigration law which would bar all persons not eligible for citizenship from entering this country, meaning to bar Asiatics, and intended to bar Japanese. And he was also against Chinese immigration. He also voted against the Soldier Bonus (how typical of the GOP), but sometimes got it right. Chief complainant was Republican Senator Samuel Morgan Shortridge of California. Stirred to action by loud protests from the California Cattlemen's Association, he charged that the Army & Navy were buying their beef from Australia and New Zealand to supply outposts in the Philippines, Hawaii, the Canal Zone. ... Senator Shortridge, skeptical of these explanations, said he would move at the next session of Congress to change the law, to require all U S. soldiers and sailors to be fed U. S. food.

I enjoy looking at history through the eyes of real people. Shortridge and his brother were simple miners when they came to CA. After becoming a lawyer he rose to considerable social standing and even membership in that infamous club. I wonder how he became a member? How did/does anyone?
Today there is a Tom Shortridge, a GOP campaign consultant who was found guilty of taking nude pictures of two underage girls; he got 3 years. Another relation?
