Scotland Yard today revealed it has been unable to trace all but two of 300 black boys aged four to seven reported missing from school in a three-month period.
Child welfare experts say the number highlights the scale of the trade in children brought to Britain as domestic servants and covers for benefit fraud.
The figure emerged through the murder inquiry following the discovery of a child's torso in the Thames in September 2001. The identity of the victim, named "Adam" by police, is not known but his background was traced to Nigeria, it is believed he died in a ritual sacrifice. Detectives asked each London local education authority to give them details of black boys aged four to seven reported missing from school between July and September 2001. It emerged 300 had vanished, 299 from Africa and one from the Caribbean.
Police only managed to trace two children. The true figure for missing boys and girls is feared to be several thousand a year.
Detective Chief Inspector Will O'Reilly, leading the hunt for Adam's killers, said: "It is a large figure, far more than we anticipated. 300 young boys didn't return to school and are really lost in the system."
Police visited the children's addresses, but in most cases were told the boys had returned to Africa. Inquiries undertaken via Interpol in the boys' home countries failed to trace them.
Journalist Yinka Sunmonu, an expert in the issue, told the BBC's Today programme: "Children are being trafficked. There is domestic slavery, physical abuse, sexual abuse. Children are ... here one day and gone the next."
The Met's recent Paladin child investigation found hundreds of unaccompanied children arrive in Britain each month.

Dude, we're talking about the UK. The bureacuracy is so bad there, that they make the Vogons look efficient.
I dont recall how many children but three are MANY children missing from the foster care program I believe in Kansas.. the kids are just gone..and they have no clue where they are located..

Late, things are simply spinning out of control today. Totally out of control. Stay safe.
They're illegals that exist outside the system. You see them everywhere there. It's not like here with the Mexicans, in London they pick them up and ship them home. It's now a lot harder to get into the UK than it was even five years ago. The searches are very extensive and effective. Now, once you're out, you're pretty much out for good. Hence, the illegals tend to stay underground and uncounted.

It would be great if the people of this country put their collective feet down, the same as the people in the UK. I have a good friend from Glasgow who lives here in the states, and he has told me much about the state of affairs over there, and apparently it's improving because the people are tired of the nonsense. Kudos to the UK, and maybe some of that sensibility will migrate to this country. I mean, you guys got the Beatles First right??? It eventually will come to this country. At least I hope anyway.

The cops and the press are really efficient for some reason. I think it's just the old tradition. Also the schools. That's the first thing you notice when you go over. They catch a lot of stuff that just goes by here. When you watch the news it seems like the country is being invaded by car theives and petty crooks and swindlers. Later you realize that the UK police just catche these types and the Americans don't. A lot of local election rigging gets nailed. This makes me think it goes on over here too, but the people just get away with it.
