We Bought An Alexa Ranking

Amazon problems with Alexa Internet

by OfficialWire NewsDesk

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (OfficialWire) -- 05/18/07 -- How many times have you check your website's Alexa Ranking? You know you have. For any self-respecting webmaster, it's not the size, but the "rank" that matters. And for many people, Alexa Internet is the tool by which they measure their success.

Well, we got curious. We started searching the Internet for answers to our questions: Is it possible to manipulate Alexa? Is toolbar manipulation the only way? Can't we just pay someone? After about 5 seconds, thanks to http://Google.com, we found a company that claimed they could advance our Alexa Ranking in exchange for money. Go figure.

We paid the cash and within a couple hours, our target website (not http://OfficialWire.com) had moved up the Alexa rank from 4.2m to 50k—WOW! Toolbar manipulation you say... Actually, there were no visits to our target website.

OfficialWire asked Alexa Internet to comment for this article, but no reply was received before we 'went to press'.

We'll wait to see if we hear from them but in the meantime:

Answers: Yes, No, Yes

Editor Note: Update, today (May 19, 2007) our target website has moved up the Alexa Rank to 28,000! Still no visits to the website though...

Poster Comment:

Do you really expect that the whole system will be honest? Come on! Do you really expect that Google is honest? COME ON!!! When was the last time that mankind achieved anything honest by itself?

I wish I had an understanding of how the system is supposed to work at least and how to increase traffic for your web site.

That is TOO funny! I think LP has been making advances on alexa lately.

I also remember that stats on alexa didn't match LP logs very well at all. Definitely good to have answers.

That would also explain the discrepancy between reach/rank and pages viewed. 4um always has a strong # for pages viewed, more than LP, but their reach & rank are always much higher. That's a disconnect, IMO.

we suspect in our guts that both Google and Alexis are controlled by CIA and dishonest. If the number of unique pages viewed here is larger than LP, then a possible explanation is that there is fraud on LP regarding all the posts they get and also fraud at Alexis. more unique pages viewed here than there, that is a real shocker. and we have the same software. maybe our users here us it more intensely, but still that is a shocker.

This has been consistently true. I don't check everyday or every week but the stats are still there.

Only in the last few days, the stats are very low, and I don't know why.

The blue is 4um, the brown LP.

maybe 'crawler' software accounts for a significant portion of the traffic here.

LP has been around longer and should have a larger archive of articles that a search engine might find, yet they have fewer page views. So I don't think that's it.

So I don't think that's it.

Don't forget that 4um has pmail and LP does not. That could make a significant statistical difference somewhere.
