Adam just got out of surgery and things were not as good as we had hoped. The skin grafts were not healing on his buttocks and turns out he took a nasty piece of shrapnal through the right butt cheek and it left a tube of a wound which is not healing. The surgeon took pretty much all of his right butt cheek off but did not have to go to bone. Adam will have to have a colostomy bag put in place on Thursday but only as a way to prevent contamination to the wound. The surgeon thinks he will only need it 6-12 months. Hopefully this will help him conquer the fever. Tomorrow we will find out how the arm burns are doing but right now not much hope for saving his fingers. The good news, the lower back and all the head skin grafts are doing well. I am glad to have you all as my family, it gives me strength to share our burden with you all.

Love you all,

Oh, good Christ.

I'm sorry, Tom.

Looks like I missed a lot. Whatever I compose won't be good enough, but you and your family will be in my thoughts.

Maybe we can set up an Adam get well fund or something(?).

My God...

It amazes me what can and cannot be done medically for our troops. I had 3rd degree burns on my fingers once from grabbing a piece of hot copper pipe. Silvadene which is a silver based salve saved my fingers, maybe they'll have the sense to apply it to his wounds.

As far as the other stuff goes, it's common practice to keep people from becoming infected to get the colostomy bag, when there's a wound that is in a place where it can't be kept clean. It is my sincere hope and prayer that he makes a full recovery, and doesn't lose anything else. I'll pray for him.

Take Care Tom.

While there is life, there is hope. And vice versa. Keep him close, and don't trust docs. They can never care for him as much as you do. Maybe they can't save the fingers, maybe they can -- with the help of informed advocates.

Oh, Tom. I am so sorry.

One more broken body struggling to heal, one among thousands broken without good reason. An entire world broken without good reason. The warmongers and empire-lusters need to pay for what they have done -- in full. It will hardly compensate, though, for what the Adams of this world have paid already (and will continue to pay), be they American or Iraqi.

May Bush, Cheney and all the rest of the serial killers atop our criminal government burn in hell for what they have wrought.

Tom, hang in there dude, and tell your nephew to also. As far as my thinking goes it will be "this will only end up positively". I'm praying for your nephews recovery, and your peace of mind. I'll be imagining legions of his white blood cells and antigens rallying to kick ass on any and all invaders to his body and for the metabolic construction crews to recover and rebuild quickly!

The Lost Children

by Gordon Lightfoot

Down the hall their voices ring, their feet are on the run
Phantoms on the winter sky, together they do come
Faded lips and eyes of blue they're carried in the wind
Their laughter filled the countryside but they'll not laugh again

All the games are ended now, their voices have been stilled
Their fathers built the tools of war by which they all were killed
Their fathers made the uniforms showing which side they were on
And the young boys wear the middle name for guns to pray upon

You've seen the fires in the night, watched the devil as he smiles
You've heard a mother's mournful cry as she searches for her child
You've seen the lines of refugees, the faces of despair
And wondered at the wise men who never seem to care

Goodbye you lost children, God speed you on your way
Your little beds are empty now, your toys are put away
Your mother sings a lullaby as she gazes at the floor
Your father builds more weapons and marches out once more

Down the hall their voices ring, their feet are on the run
Phantoms on the winter sky, together they do come
Faded lips and eyes of blue they're carried in the wind
Their laughter filled the countryside but they'll not laugh again

This is a song that Gordon Lightfoot wrote that comes to mind when I think of the unnessesary horrors and sheer waste of wars.

My thoughts and best hopes and wishes for his best and fastest recovery. I work doing anti-recruiting in schools, something us veterans can do well; cut through the bullshit Military recruiters feed these kids.

Next kid I talk into forgetting a commitment or plan to go into the military I'll think of your nephew when that happens.

It's a sad thing that we have to save our kid's lives by talking them out of going for the upward social mobility and pay and benefit advantages of military life. That they go that route out of sheer bordom in a land where adventure and enjoyment have been legislated out of existance. A place of service and other menial jobs and high rents and other costs to escape from, that's the downer of anti-recruiting; you know that which ever option kids take, service or civilian life, both have bleak, dangerous aspects to them.

It is a damn shame we have a government intent on imperial aquisition of oil no matter how many kids they kill or maim to do this. Conversely, it is also a damn shame that they care so little about quality of life and oppertunity in this country unless you are rich.

I want to see these guys on trial and in prison for their war crimes. Sorry for the rant, but this sort of thing really pulls my chain. I really hope he recovers fast and intact.

Even more, I hope this country and allof us recover from this horrible and bloody ordeal these neocons have dragged us through.

Good God.

Either I've lived a sheltered life, or I'm at an age where I was never close up to war. During Vietnam I was a little kid and young teenager and didn't pay attention to those things, was just unaware of them.

Since reading about your nephew from when you first reported his being hit by the bomb under his vehicle, and reading the graphic accounts of his wounds, it's made me think of this whole situation in general, I've been praying for all the wounded people in the Walter Reed hospital, and wondering how they endure all of the suffering. Also their parents and other relatives must be besides themselves, and there are so many of them.

How does a person cope with having parts of their bodies removed, horrible burns, colostomy bags and raging infections? It sounds like hell to me, or what I would imagine hell to be like.

It's made me feel very fortunate that I've never encountered such a thing in my life, and have never known anyone who has. At the same time it makes me realize this sort of thing could happen to any of us, we have no idea what the future holds, it's a wake up call to be sure.

I hope they are giving him plenty of morphine and sedatives.

One more broken body struggling to heal, one among thousands broken without good reason.

This story of tom's nephew really brings home the reality of that for me. We don't hear much of these details in the news, for instance I had no idea of the conditions of Walter Reed hospital until reading about this, it sounds like it's not much more than a dumping ground for badly wounded troops. tom I'm glad Adam is in a good hospital now.

A World War I-era American soldier in a hospital realizes that he was hit by an artillery shell and lost his arms, legs, ears, eyes and most of his face. The remaining torso and head is being kept alive by machines. Using his head to tap out morse code, he asks someone to help him leave the hospital or die. Neither of his wishes are granted.

What gets me is the recruiters go to high schools and get the guys all hyped up to join. I know young guys tend to think they are immortal, that nothing bad can happen to them, they must think that because who would want to take a chance ending up with half their body blown away? I just don't get it. I suppose the recruiters don't focus much on that possibility when trying to get them to enlist, makes me curious as to what they tell them, how they sell to them joining the military to go into combat.

Mike,

Although your sensitivity is well known I'm not sure that this is the right time to reference this most disturbing book and film.

Perhaps because the plot is my worst nightmare, and I live clean and am honest in all my dealings just so our creator will take notice and hopefully never allow this to happen to me.

The thought of anyone suffering that way makes me want to weep and scream. And, I don't have a loved one undergoing a medical ordeal.

To those who are inclined to make anti war statements here, I ask for your compassion for those who are beyond that now.

I am glad to have you all as my family, it gives me strength to share our burden with you all.

As a family member I will share this with you.

Those of us of WW2/Korea duty are passing on to a better life at a national rate of 1200 per day. Soon our numbers will be few and our burden will rest upon veterans of Vietnam and Iraq. We have grieved for years over lost family and friends, a grief that never ends. Now we can only silently cry as we witness once again the innocent young men of our country that pay the price for the arrogance of its elders.

May God bless your nephew and his family...
