Adam just got out of surgery and things were not as good as we had hoped. The skin grafts were not healing on his buttocks and turns out he took a nasty piece of shrapnal through the right butt cheek and it left a tube of a wound which is not healing. The surgeon took pretty much all of his right butt cheek off but did not have to go to bone. Adam will have to have a colostomy bag put in place on Thursday but only as a way to prevent contamination to the wound. The surgeon thinks he will only need it 6-12 months. Hopefully this will help him conquer the fever. Tomorrow we will find out how the arm burns are doing but right now not much hope for saving his fingers. The good news, the lower back and all the head skin grafts are doing well. I am glad to have you all as my family, it gives me strength to share our burden with you all. Love you all,

Good God. Either I've lived a sheltered life, or I'm at an age where I was never close up to war. During Vietnam I was a little kid and young teenager and didn't pay attention to those things, was just unaware of them. Since reading about your nephew from when you first reported his being hit by the bomb under his vehicle, and reading the graphic accounts of his wounds, it's made me think of this whole situation in general, I've been praying for all the wounded people in the Walter Reed hospital, and wondering how they endure all of the suffering. Also their parents and other relatives must be besides themselves, and there are so many of them. How does a person cope with having parts of their bodies removed, horrible burns, colostomy bags and raging infections? It sounds like hell to me, or what I would imagine hell to be like. It's made me feel very fortunate that I've never encountered such a thing in my life, and have never known anyone who has. At the same time it makes me realize this sort of thing could happen to any of us, we have no idea what the future holds, it's a wake up call to be sure. I hope they are giving him plenty of morphine and sedatives.
This story of tom's nephew really brings home the reality of that for me. We don't hear much of these details in the news, for instance I had no idea of the conditions of Walter Reed hospital until reading about this, it sounds like it's not much more than a dumping ground for badly wounded troops. tom I'm glad Adam is in a good hospital now.

What gets me is the recruiters go to high schools and get the guys all hyped up to join. I know young guys tend to think they are immortal, that nothing bad can happen to them, they must think that because who would want to take a chance ending up with half their body blown away? I just don't get it. I suppose the recruiters don't focus much on that possibility when trying to get them to enlist, makes me curious as to what they tell them, how they sell to them joining the military to go into combat.
Tom, I'm so sorry to hear about your nephew's injuries. How many of our youth are being damaged, destroyed and discarded ? I don't think we'll ever really know the truth, but each one is too many.

I was listening to Bush's comments about amnesty for the illegal Mexicans yesterday and couldn't help thinking that he sounded desparate in his threats towards those opposed to his plan. He needs troops and Americans are disenchanted. Poor Mexicans will become the cannon fodder when he runs out of Americans.

That is if you haven't already. It is an older book, but it's message is timeless. Mike, Although your sensitivity is well known I'm not sure that this is the right time to reference this most disturbing book and film. Perhaps because the plot is my worst nightmare, and I live clean and am honest in all my dealings just so our creator will take notice and hopefully never allow this to happen to me. The thought of anyone suffering that way makes me want to weep and scream. And, I don't have a loved one undergoing a medical ordeal. To those who are inclined to make anti war statements here, I ask for your compassion for those who are beyond that now.

As a family member I will share this with you. Those of us of WW2/Korea duty are passing on to a better life at a national rate of 1200 per day. Soon our numbers will be few and our burden will rest upon veterans of Vietnam and Iraq. We have grieved for years over lost family and friends, a grief that never ends. Now we can only silently cry as we witness once again the innocent young men of our country that pay the price for the arrogance of its elders. May God bless your nephew and his family...

Au contraire, the book speaks of the survival of a casualty in those time would be left to die. The book is mostly written about the life of the man with his current condition as a framing of how cherished and valuble his life was and the tragedy of his passing from it to a half existance. I see a burning building, that building is called Iraq. Men wome and children are dying in it and the demented fire chief, George Bush won't pull people out and let the fire incited by our presence die away. I am grieved. You have to understand that I was in the Army long enough to still care about it and I care about this country. All I have is my power to try to communicate my thoughts. To try to make people think and understand things that create deeper understanding of the context of this war. By doing so I better think things through and understand things better myself. Thanks for your input, but I do not concur. If the war was over or never had occurred, OK, you would have a point. It is important to have threads like this to remind ourselves what we care about most and to remind ourselves why family and friends are what make us all whole. Since this thread started until now, this moment and at the time of it's natural death, more precious lives have been rubbed out or damged by this war. I am going nuts with grief, anger, a sense of helpless rage. I am sorry you only see my words and none of my tears and sleeplessness at night. How I anger easily and find it hard to concentrate on important things I need to do as life goes on. But I assure you I can say nothing but what I did and do now in light of how I feel these days. I know you say what you do because you care, but so do I. We all do what we have to do.

It hurts us all to hear of a tragedy like this, but for you - the family - the pain must be immense. I'm sure the answer is zero, just like all the other government cronies whose only real concerns/ties to this "war" on an undefinable "enemy" are how much profit they reap from their investments in the various "war machine" companies. General Smedley Butler had it right when he said that the best way to assure that wars would ONLY be fought if absolutely necessary, and then a swift victory and an end to the war brought about in very short order would be a law mandating that immediately upon declaration of war, ALL legislators, ALL parties of the administration, and ALL executives of ALL war-supply/contractor companies have their salaries reduced to the same amount as a Private-First-Class in the army makes for the length of the war...

A Call From Baghdad My son called this morning, he's ok. But we had a really good conversation. A lot of it was about the increase in activity there. But he's starting to defy the officers. He refused to wear his flame suit on patrol this morning because he said, "a lot good it does, we just lost 4 guys and they were wearing them, we just have them because of war profiteering. The government gives money to the companies who make this shit and say ‘oh, let's give it to the soldiers!’" Then we started talking about movies, and he refuses to watch anything related to 9/11. He said, "Ma, did you watch that WTC movie yet? We have it here and I won't watch that stuff because it just gets everybody pissed off again and I am tired of hearing that we should kill more people because of 9/11." He then said, "Ma, by the year 2050 we will still be killing in the name of 9/11!!" "Probably when I die and go to heaven people will still be saying, let's kill because of 9/11!" "Enough with killing in the name of 9/11!" I tell all my friends here that we should just move on and get over it. We aren't proving anything." I almost fell out of bed. But he was able to talk freely because he was told to stay back from patrol because he wouldn't wear his flame suit. He said "I lost it." They said “how the hell did you loose it?” He said it disappeared! Then he said to me, "so what are they going to do to me? Make me go to Iraq?" "I'm not taking part in any war profiteering.
