The cards would allow undocumented residents to receive basic services at banks and libraries. City Hall has been inundated with e-mails from people against the cards. Ted Pechinski who is with the group Citizens for Immigration Reform said, "Tell me how it's going to benefit the legal citizens of this country, of this city." The group has posted flyers all over the city and Mayor DeStefano says their literature is a form of intimidation. "This is hate-based literature. It's done to inspire fear and to make people feel better about themselves by having someone else to blame," said Mayor DeStefano. "I hate anyone who calls me a bigot. I am looking out for the American citizen," said Pechinski. Angelo Reyes, a Fair Haven businessman, disagrees. He says many of his customers are undocumented immigrants. "They have a right to their freedom of speech but I think they're wrong on this one. They're not the ones out there doing all the labor work," said Reyes. The mayor says that private funding is behind the cards and threats will not stop him from distributing them. "If a group wants to debate immigration policy that is fair game. We can debate immigration policy but we don't make ourselves better by tearing each other down," said Mayor DeStefano. ===== From October 4, 2005 New Haven mayor suggests identification for illegal immigrants NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Mayor John DeStefano Jr. is suggesting that the city provide legal identification cards to illegal immigrants as part of a program to make city and other services more accessible. DeStefano said Monday he wants to give illegal immigrants a legitimate form of ID so they can open bank accounts, prove their identity to police and access social services. "The failure of the federal government to recognize and embrace thousands and thousands of hard working residents is subjecting those people and their families to abuse and exploitation," DeStefano said. But the suggested program would violate immigration laws, said Elise Marciano, leader of Connecticut Citizens for Immigration Control. "You are not supposed to aid and abet illegal aliens," she said. "They have no documents. They could give you any name. They could go and get 15 different ID cards with different names. How would you know?" Supporters of illegal immigrants say the population badly needs a form of ID but they fear federal immigration officials could easily use the information to round up illegals. In addition to the identification cards, the city is also urging local banks to allow immigrants to open accounts without required Social Security numbers.
Poster Comment: Ahh, crap. This idiot wants to give illegal immigrants social services while the teacher's pension fund is in deficit. He was interviewed on radio this morning (WTIC, about 9:15) and gave the standard line "jobs that Americans won't do." Connecticut has serious problems that are not being addressed. 25-35 year-old graduates are leaving because of high costs; they can't find a job that will pay for housing and college loans. Question on www.wtic.com reguarding immigration: New Haven Is Introducing An Identity Card For Illegal Immigrants. Do You Support This Idea? No= 84% of course, that's the intelligent Internet users.
