A fragile bipartisan compromise that would legalize millions of unlawful immigrants suffered a setback Thursday when it failed a test vote, leaving its prospects uncertain.

Still, the measure - a top priority for President Bush that's under attack from the right and left - got a reprieve when Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he would give it more time before yanking the bill and moving on to other matters.

"We need to complete this marathon," Reid said.

His decision set the stage for yet another procedural vote later Thursday that will measure lawmakers' appetite for a so-called "grand bargain" between liberals and conservatives on immigration.

By a vote of 33-63, the Senate fell far short of the 60 votes that would have been needed to limit debate on the immigration measure and put it on a path to passage. Republicans - even those who helped craft the measure and are expected to support it - banded together to oppose that move, while a majority of Democrats backed it.

Republicans were seeking assurances they would get chances to add several conservative-backed changes that would toughen the measure.

Proponents in both parties were scrambling to find a way of reversing a blow their compromise sustained earlier Thursday, when the Senate voted to phase out the bill's temporary worker program after five years.

This calls for more outrage, via emails, phone calls and/or telegrams, to the senate and House ... as well as to the POTUS and his right hand shill, Cheney.

Why waste time and energy screaming at the POTUS or the Cheney? They don't care and they don't fear because they will never again face an election.

There's one senator on the floor right now, proposing that any company that lays off Americans should be granted ZERO guest worker visas.

Antiparty - find out why, think about 'how'

In my opinion, it is not wasting time or energy to put the bastards we elected to represent us on notice that they are NOT doing the job we sent them to do. I refuse to shut up and have them count me among the sleeping masses.

As for who is against the immigration bill, I have taken notice, believe me. Furthermore, my notice will dictate who I will vote for in future elections, however significant or insignificant that may be. In addition, that vote will NOT go to an Israel-firster, either.

among the sleeping masses.

"sleeping...unwashed...masses".

If no one puts them on notice, the politicians take that as affirmation of their representation.

Well, it is against the law to have a revolution, but what about another Civil War. I wonder if that is illegal?????

xactly my point.

Well, if Civil War is also illegal, what are the unwashed masses to do with a government that has become our master, not our servant??

Tell your reps that you will vote in the primary and vote against them no matter what if they support this.

The GOP believes the the fundamentalist Christians and Fox News Crowd are too well controlled to go anywhere and the Democrats believe their base is too smart to join the FreeRepublic / Fox News crowd. Hence, both sides believe they have nothing to lose.

A drive to vote the the seated reps out in the primaries doesn't require anyone to leave the party. This threat is scary to them.

Civil Disobedience coupled with massive demonstrations coupled with backing opponents of these clowns.

Fight the battle in the streets. Do it politely but forcefully and turn people out in numbers that the police cannot possibly process.

They have to pay attention to that when you have hundreds of thousands of people turning out to rally for 'THROW THE BUM OUT'

If that fails, then you take the 2A solution. But not until.

America is not at war. The military is at war. America is at the mall and the Congress is out to lunch.

I been trying to get "hundred of thousand of people" to turn out to protest for months. All are too "comfortable."

There comes the sticking part...Way back to FDR, he found out the best way to control people was via the US Treasury and it works..

Social security being the biggest weapon.

Then tell the people it will vanish if this BS keeps up! Threaten their security.

That will turn them out into the streets.

Take it away and then you will see action. Until then, civil strife with average white American will not happen.

I understand that it appears to be true. What is also true is that most of us "white Americans" are usually too busy working to be able to get in someone's face.

A very odd idea I've been tossing around for a while is this:

Working Americans have money. Why not hire Day Labor to go protest for us while we work our jobs? Everyone wins and the ironic part would be that illegal aliens would be protesting...themselves!

Comments?

America is not at war. The military is at war. America is at the mall and the Congress is out to lunch.

I'd say it is a very workable idea.
