(06-07) 18:05 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) -- A broad immigration bill to legalize millions of people in the U.S. unlawfully failed a crucial test vote Thursday, a stunning setback that could spell its defeat for the year. The vote was 45-50 against limiting debate on the bill, 15 short of the 60 that the bill's supporters needed to prevail. Most Republicans voted to block Democrats' efforts to bring the bill to a final vote. The legislation, which had been endorsed by President Bush, would tighten borders, institute a new system to prevent employers from hiring undocumented workers in addition to giving up to 12 million illegal immigrants a pathway to legal status. Conceived by an improbable coalition that nicknamed the deal a "grand bargain," the measure exposed deep rifts within both parties and is loathed by most GOP conservatives. Senate Majority Harry Reid, D-Nev., who had made no secret of his distaste for parts of the bill, said earlier he would move on to other matters if the immigration measure's supporters didn't get 60 votes Thursday night. The defeat set off a bitter round of partisan recriminations, with Democrats and Republicans each accusing the other of killing it. Most Republicans voted against ending debate, saying they needed more time to make the bill tougher with tighter border security measures and a more arduous legalization process for unlawful immigrants. All but a handful of Democrats supported the move, but they, too, were holding their noses at provisions of the bill. Many of them argued it makes second-class citizens of a new crop of temporary workers and rips apart families by prioritizing employability over blood ties in future immigration. Still, they had argued that the measure, on balance, was worth advancing. "We can all find different aspects of this legislation that we differ with," said Sen. Edward M. As other sites worry about Islamofascism, our own (cough) public servants are most likely looking at the justice system in Mexico now, as they review their options on this little amnesty bill squabble. OH, it's to look like a hanky fight to impress the few left with faith in them. They must ask themselves, 'Shall my head become a soccer ball, as I am now, an organ donor in the grip of LaRaza? Or, shall I announce a medical issue and enter rehab, in Paraguay.' To me, amnesty is likely a done deal... these golden hundred in Congress, are negotiating for a tad more than gold watches and a 3 day cruise to Ensenada with a pair of free wine glasses, a hula hoop and a beachball signed by the captain. Once Amnesty passes, I bet the whole of DC books for faraway beaches. Hope they get their TB shot.

Incidentally, I love Mexico and the Mexicans IN Mexico. It's a great place to visit and to spend a vacation. In many ways, Mexicans in Mexico are freer than Americans in America. There are fewer regulations and more personal freedoms. The state is weak and corrupt and corruptible and, more often than not, you interact with red-blooded people, not with fish-eyed, absurd bureaucrats. I will be there in a few days and I know I will be sorry to return back home after 2 weeks. Why do the Mexicans come here by the millions? I bet it's those weak ones who wish to live in a Welfare state, not the proud individualists. The weak Mexicans coming here by the millions help make Mexico a better place and accelerate America's eventual and inevitable collapse.

From what I'm hearing and reading, it is pretty much a 'dead duck' until after the 2008 elections. Even if the Senate should cobble something together, it hasn't a 'hope in hell' in the House.

Let's see what Bush can do via executive orders, secret findings and active non-enforcement of existing laws.

So where does this bill go? Will they resuscitate it w/pork and bring it back as they did NAFTA/GATT? I'm thinking yes. Bush wants this every bit as much as war.
Why is it no one wants to live in a freer place? /rhetorical As I explained at #11, it is not true that 'no one wants to live in a freer place". Those who come to the US now come here not because they seek freedom but because they wish to share in the benefits of the Welfare state, designed to benefit the weak in return for the weak giving up their freedoms. There are many Americans who moved to Mexico and other places permanently. They are not there because they seek economic benefits but because they do not wish to be bothered by the overwhelmingly intrusive US state.

The current law calls for the building of a 700 mile fence. The abandoned bill had half of that left. Does this mean that they are going to proceed with the 700 mile fence now? I don't think so. Like with the 1986 amnesty law, which has serious penalty for employers hiring illegals and provides for the deportation of illegals, the prez will refuse to enforce it. And, why should he? He's the freaking Dee Cider and no one tells him how to run the country.

The D.C. scum have forced the situation to get as bad as it is ... intentionally. They have no intention of stopping it either. They didn't enforce the prior laws and won't enforce the fraud being proposed now. Arresting and jailing anyone convicted of hiring or housing illegals and denying them any type of benefits, would cause the illegals to go home. It's a simple problem to solve. The perps are doing as they're told.
