6/12/2007 - Tuesday

Adam had surgery today as planned to check the wounds/vacuum packs; no dead tissue was found and packs were resealed. Following the surgery Adam was successfully taken off the ventilator and as of 10PM tonight he was still breathing on his own. His voice is very hoarse and though things are still hazy for him, he was able to answer some questions with single word responses when asked.

No surgeries are planned for tomorrow so hopefully he will remain off the ventilator the entire day Wednesday. Thursday they plan on re-checking the wounds/vacuum packs; they also are tentatively planning to do some ortho-work on the right leg. The left leg (operated on yesterday) was swollen today but was understandable/expected based on the procedure performed.

Overall a good day.

6/13/2007 - Wednesday

Adam seems to have calmed down later today although his respirations are still too high (30 plus). His blood gas has deteriorated some but Doc was not too concerned - in other words they have no incubation plans. Lungs have a pretty good rattle and he is is trying to cough. He is still not talking although he is fairly effective a shaking his head to commands.

Looks like at this point the Ortho docs are only going to check the wound vacs (leg) on 6/14 and possibly do surgery on the right leg Saturday (6/16)? Main Doc White said he does not plan to check the butt wound vac until Fri so perhaps no surgery on Fri?

He has developed a hemotoma on his inner right thigh which they just plan to watch. They hate to lance and install another wound vac unless they must.

He needs to sleep and has slept very little in the last 2-3 days. Sally and I speculate his brain is racing to assess and there is considerable to assess. Plus he has been heavily medicated which they have backed off on - maybe that will help? Susan had him pretty settled as of 8:30 pm.

He is drinking a little from a straw.

As Doc White said "no big set backs since the clotting."

The heparin, although necessary, continues to complicate. His left leg is bleeding some since the surgery on Monday pm.

I noticed the wound vac has been removed from his left foot. Subscribe to *9-11*

I guess I'm behind some. I've looked back thru the current list and haven't seen anything. If it's not too much to ask, what happened?

Sounds terrible what-ever it was and thoughts and prayers are with you.

f it's not too much to ask, what happened?

He was the driver of a Stryker fighting vehicle when it was hit hard by an IED outside of Baghdad. Been a couple of weeks ago.

Ahhh...ok. I'm glad he survived it but I'm sure he has a tough recovery road ahead. Like I said, prayers for him and family.

"Been a couple of weeks ago."

A couple of weeks that must seem like a thousand years. He is lucky to be alive. I'm glad he lived.
