Today is the last day city workers can register for a chance to apply for disability benefits related to their work at the World Trade Center site. Those who qualify have to file a notice of participation, reserving their right to apply for a tax-free accidental disability pension.
To qualify, workers must have worked at least 40 hours at one of four sites between September 11, 2001 and September 12, 2002.
Workers must have developed or think they will develop a Trade Center related sickness or injury while working at the World Trade Center, the Fresh Kills Landfill, the city morgue, or one of the temporary morgues on piers or barges between the West Side and Fresh Kills.
