"We were a family who had been abused by the federal government and we were tired on it," says Randy Weaver. 59-year-old Weaver holds two pictures. His son Samuel, and wife Vicki. Both were killed during a shootout with federal agents at Weaver's home in Idaho almost 15 years ago. The stand-off, which has since been known simply as Ruby Ridge, sparked anti-government movements across the country. "And the rest of this country is still being abused and I am waiting for them to get tired of it. And apparently, Mr. and Mrs Brown over there have." It is a message that Weaver told national media at a press conference Monday afternoon. It took place in front of the Brown's home in Plainfield. WCAX reporter Adam Sullivan sat down with Weaver earlier in the day. "I didn't come out here to give them advice. They are thinking on their own and I am all for that," says Weaver. He also says he came to Plainfield to support the Browns. Ed and Elaine Brown have been sentenced to serve over five years in federal prison. The government says they owe over $750,000 in back-taxes. But, the Browns maintain the tax is not legal. "People's lives have been ruined, they have been killed, incarcerated, their homes stolen from them, all for a law that doesn't exist," says Elaine Brown. "There is no law. How can I put it in my words? We looked and looked and looked, and we are still looking today," says Ed Brown. But, when asked if they planned to appeal their conviction in an effort to set the precedent for all future cases, the Browns said no. They said that all court systems are corrupt and, therefore, an appeal could not be won. It is a message reiterated by a member of the Republic Broadcast Network which helped set up the press conference. "There is no guarantee if this man was dumb enough to turn himself in, and he is not a dumb man, that there is any guarantees that there would even be an appeal," says John Stadtmiller of Republic Broadcast Network. Weaver shares the anti-government sentiment. Though he takes it a step further. Weaver feels the government should be overthrown. "To be honest with you, somebody should. We need to start over," he says. Weaver was very cordial when Adam spoke with him, but he did get upset at times with some of the questions from the media, as did Ed Brown who chastised the media for not doing their homework on what he calls an illegal tax. There was no sign Monday of U.S. Marshals in Plainfield. U.S. Marshall Stephen Monier says the feds will not attack the compound. Their strategy seems to be to wait them out.
