early Genesis, Yes and Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, and less apparent maestros, like John McLaughlin and his Mahavishnu Orchestra, the Dixie Dregs and French electric violinist Jean-Luc Ponty.

I have all that in my collection. I'm a huge fan of Gentle Giant and all the early Genesis stuff. Even though I'm a pure rock drummer I've always preferred listening to prog. Back in the '70s when my bandmates were listening to Aerosmith and the hard driving rock of that era,I preferred stuff like Yes,Starcastle,ELP,Atomic Rooster,Triumvirat,Nectar,King Crimson,Gentle Giant,Wishbone Ash,Mahavishnu Orchestra(with Billy Cobham) and Genesis etc.

One of the ex-bassplayers in one of my bands moved out of state started a very successful buisness re-enginering old recordings such as rare albums which can't be replaced and haven't been re-released. Now and then,he'll get a recording to cleanup. If he thinks I would be interested,he'll send me a copy. Last month he sent me "Happy the Man." Even though I had heard of them,I never really heard a recording. After about 10 minutes of listening,I became an instant fan. Great stuff!!!

That is what I look for and one of reasons I'm a huge Zappa fan. Being a drummer,I appreciate the signature changes. 2/4 can get rather monotonous and boring.

You did a pretty good job at naming some of my favorites. Several more would be Terry Bozzio,Carl Palmer and Alan White.

For pure meat and potato drummers I would have to pick Bonzo,Ringo,Jerry Shirley,Jim Foxx and Simon Kirk. Ginger Baker and Carmine Appice were/are great too and along with Bonzo are in a class of their own as rock drummers.

Some great studio drummers would be Steve Gadd,Hal Blaine,Jim Keltner Carl Palmer.

There are so many and I'm sure I missed a lot of names.

I'm a big fan.

For blues guitarists I still like "The World's Greatest Unkon Guitar Player"...Roy Buchanan. Again,that's a different catagory with many great ones. I was glad to see Buddy Guy finally get his due.

Yep.

I can remember some of his testimony. Tipper Gore wanted to know what kind of toys his kids had and he told her to 'Come on over and I'll show ya." And Al claimed to be a fan... lol Some of his lyrics were really crude and he hated P.C.(which was great) but his ability to write and compose was incredible.

Zappa was a genius in many ways.

Frank did make an album from his testimony.

Of course it has clips of the hearing mingled with music and is very amusing at times. At one point,Frank tells one of the panelists to "Bend down and sniff my anal vapors." It wasn't from the actual testimony but was overdubed to make one his points.

The title is "Frank Zappa meets the Mothers of Prevention."

That's a typical Zappa linup. He only hired the best. Most musicians said it was an 'honor' to be asked to do his albums.

I think that's the band with Roky Erikson (sp?)--another Syd Barrett- style "casualty."

I was trying to remember the story earlier but had too many other pressing matters to attend to. Roky didn't fry his brains, the government did. He was busted for marijuana and locked up in a psych ward because the system saw him as a threat. While he was locked up he was regularly subjected to large doses of any number of experimental drugs, and I think they did some electroshock as well. It's been years since I read about it, so please forgive me if I've mangled some of the details.
