Just as the Senate prepares to revisit a controversial immigration bill, the White House Council of Economic Advisers released a report Wednesday which says that U.S. native workers benefit from legal and illegal immigration.

“Immigrants tend to complement (not substitute for ) native workers, raising natives’ productivity and income,” said the report.

Other findings include:

— Immigrants are a critical part of the U.S. workforce and contribute to productivity growth and technological advancement. Immigrants make up 15% of all workers and even larger shares of certain occupations such as construction, food services and health care.

— About 40% of Ph.D. scientists working in the United States are foreign born.

— Many immigrants are entrepreneurs. The Kauffman Foundation’s index of entrepreneurial activity is nearly 40% higher for immigrants than for natives. The Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City, Mo., studies and finances entrepreneurship and innovation.

— Immigrants have lower crime rates than natives. Among men aged 18 to 40, immigrants are much less likely to be incarcerated than natives.

The report states that the word “immigrant” includes both legal and illegal foreign born people.

I love it. People are SO opposed to more immigration, and so of course our "representative" government is merrily telling us just how WONDERFUL more immigration is. This is all in preparation for the "miraculous" resurrection of that new amnesty for illegals. Because we are, after all, a free country with a representative government, that just happens to always give the elites whatever they want.

Many immigrants are entrepreneurs.

The opening chapters of The Dhandho Investor well explain a fad among certain honkies for adopting kids from India.

Take the Patels, described as folks "with all the odds stacked against them... How did this small, impoverished ethnic group come out of nowhere and end up controlling such vast resources?"

We learn that the Parsis were kicked out of Iran in the 12th century, and ended up in Gujarat, where they were welcomed. The Patels were originally a kind of landlord. "Most villages in Gujarat had a patidar appointed by the ruler who was responsible for collecting land taxes, providing security, and running a streamlined farming operation. In medieval times, these patidars were chosen on the basis of their savvy management and farming skills."

And they were loved by the taxpayers and farm workers too, I'm sure.

But purely because their large families -- which made it harder, over time, for many Patels to earn a buck, as they try hard to avoid competing against each other -- a number of Patels emigrated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to places like Uganda. "...over the ensuing decades.. they came to control a large proportion of the business in Uganda."

Idi Amin ultimately "revoked the residency permits of all Asians regardless of whether they had any natural homeland to return to."

The Indian government refused to take any Indian-origin refugees from Uganda.

So good old Uncle Sam accepted them.

They went into the motel business, did very well.

"... with such high cash flow coming in, Papa Patel is soon flush with cash. He still has a very modest lifestyle. His eldest son comes of age in a few years and he hands over the motel to him. The family buys a modest house [and moves out of the motel] and goes hunting for the next motel to buy.

This time, they buy a larger motel with 50 rooms. The family no longer lives at the motel, but still does most of the work with little in the way of hired help. The formula is simple: fixate on keeping costs as low as possible, charge lower rates than all competitors, drive up the occupancy, and maximize free cash flow. Finally, keep handing motels over to up-and-coming Patel relatives to run while adding more and more properties."

(emphasis added)

"There is a snowball effect here and, over time, we end up with these amazing statistics -- half of all motels in the United States are under Patel ownership."

And since Dhandho investing is very risk-averse, the rule is to invest in imitators, not innovators.

She's practical.
She's organized.
She instinctively knows how to run a meeting.
Oh my God! I married a JOBIE!

So let’s eliminate all borders!
