Three things you can do to beat the immigration bill

http://www.englishfirst.org/efalert62107.html

Senator Ted Kennedy wants to put the UN in charge of U.S. immigration policy.

Ted Kennedy has reintroduced the Senate immigration legislation this week and added 92 pages to its 326-page predecessor. (The new longer bill is S.1639; the shorter one is S.1348.)

Pages 388-389 of revised immigration bill invoke "any treaty or other international agreement to which the United States is a party," including treaties never previously ratified by the U.S. Senate.

These treaties include the "Declaration of the Rights of the Child," adopted by the United Nations in 1959 (an 1989 expansion of which is still firmly opposed by the Bush Administration") and the "Vienna Declaration and Program of Action", which was "adopted by consensus" in 1993.

The practical effect of this section of the amnesty bill would be to get the United Nations involved in deciding America's immigration policy AND place the Senate on record as endorsing these already controversial international agreements.

In other words, the bill may be new but it is now actually worse than its predecessor.

Senators are getting grumpy and may overreact to even mild criticism from constituents.

I heard people literally yell at Senator Mel Martinez when he was on C-SPAN one morning recently. I can assure you that Martinez and his fellow Senators are not used to anything but a quiet, "with all due respect Senator, I believe you may be mistaken."

Some Senators and especially their staff seem to actually believe they are victims of an organized effort by a handful of people. The truth is that almost nobody outside the White House grounds likes the immigration bill and the American people don't understand why their wishes are being ignored.

Still, if you raise your voice a little too much, their staff will claim your telephone call was nothing but a profane, racist tirade. Firm, but polite communication is critical right now.

Now what? Three things you might do

(1) If you have not already e-mailed your own two Senators, please do so.

English First has set up a way for you to e-mail your own two Senators and urge them to vote against cloture on the immigration bill here.

(2) Everyone should fax a letter to or call these two Republican Party leaders: Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) (Senate Minority leader) and Senator John Ensign (R-NV) (head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee).

Both of these men have national concerns regarding future Republican success. Accordingly, they deserve to hear from the nation on immigration. (E-mail from outside the state will generally not be seen. Faxes will be seen and telephone calls answered.)

I have prepared some sample letters to give you some ideas about what you might say. While these letters can be cut and pasted directly into your word processor, please consider making them more personal.

You might be a contributor to the Republican Party. Or you might be a legal immigrant who did things the right way. One man walked into his state's Republican Party headquarters, showed them his decades-old Republican Party registration card, tore it in half and said he had never been so disappointed in his party. Tell them your story.

Sample letter to McConnell:

The Honorable Mitch McConnell United States Senate Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Senator McConnell,

The chances of Republicans gaining Senate seats in 2008 were considered slim even before this session of Congress began. Please understand that if Senate Republican votes make it possible for the Senate to pass the immigration bill (S.1639/S.1348), those already slim chances will be greatly reduced.

Many Americans voted for President Bush despite his views on America's immigration and language policies, not, as some would have you believe, because of those policies.

There is no hurry to pass a bill that began as a 323 page mishmash and is now a 400 plus page monstrosity that few have read and even fewer fully comprehend. Is anyone other than Ted Kennedy entirely certain what this legislation does and does not do?

Haste makes waste. Please vote "no" on all cloture motions relating to S.1639/S.1348 and encourage your fellow Republicans to do likewise.

Thank you

Sample letter to Ensign:

The Honorable John Ensign United States Senate Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Senator Ensign,

As chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee this cycle, you already had a pretty hard row to hoe, even without the immigration controversy.

Should the votes of Senate Republican make it possible for the immigration bill (S.1639/S.1348) to pass, Republicans from Maine to California are likely to stay home on Election Day, 2008.

Thank you

(3) There are 13 more Republican Senators considered gettable on cloture. If any of the Senators listed below are yours, please send them a fax or give them a call.

While you can simply cut and paste the following draft letter, please consider making the letter as personal as you possibly can. Tell your story.

The Honorable [Name] United States Senate Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Senator [Name],

Do you enjoy being in the minority and watching the Democrats run the Senate? If so, feel free to vote for cloture on the Senate immigration bill (S.1639/S.1348).
