Stupak Amendments for FDA Reform Stupak Amendments for FDA Reform In our ongoing efforts addressing institutional conflict of interest within the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the AAHF strongly backs the efforts of Congressman Bart Stupak to make the agency more accountable to the American people. In May 2007 when Senator Kennedy's FDA Revitalization Act was approved in the Senate and sent on to the House of Representatives, Rep. Stupak was ready with six carefully crafted amendments to mandate greater accountability, efficiency and openness by the FDA. Over the past seven years Stupak and his colleagues have painstakingly reviewed FDA activities repeatedly finding the FDA to be an agency characterized by a conflicts of interest between its roles in first approving and later monitoring products, a lack of transparency in many activities, delayed safety measures, failures to make known controversial findings, and frequent closed door meetings with pharmaceutical manufacturers. On June 24, 2007, with AAHF support, Representative Stupak succeeded in convincing the House Energy and Commerce Committee to amend the FDA Bill with two of his six reform amendments. One successful amendment created specific safety-related performance goals, while another provides for greater transparency by mandating that transcripts of FDA meetings with industry and consumer groups be made public. A third vital amendments which was NOT approved provided for a clear separation within the FDA between pre-market approval of drugs and the continuing safety monitoring of those drugs but there is still an opportunity in Committee to further the amendment. At present there exists a dangerous conflict of interest in the FDA due to the mixing of these distinct functions. Please write to your member of Congress asking him to support Representative Stupak's FDA Drug Safety Amendments. We need to an FDA which will is accountable to the American people TODAY. Thank you for helping to protect the right of the consumer to choose and the practitioner to practice. Remember, your financial support allows us to keep on top of Congress.
