All is Vanity See other All is Vanity Articles Title: The Time I Saw Two Guys Shoot Each Other Many years ago the drinking age in Illinois used to be 19, although since then it's been raised to 21. While it was 19, I was in college, and when I came home I'd go to the local bars, usually with my sister and some of her friends. None of the bars were actually good ones (it was just the area I was raised in) and one night I was downstairs playing pool with a friend of mine, when one of the guys watching and (I thought) waiting for his turn to play, pulls out a pistol and shoots this other guy in the forehead! From about three foot away! Now how do you think you might act in the situation like that? Hurl yourself under the pool table? Nope, that's not what happens. Everything happened so fast I had no time to react. I was standing there chalking my cue when BOOM! and when it was over I was still standing there chalking my cue. I was completely frozen and didn't move an inch. I looked at the guy I was with, and he too was frozen. His eyes looked like the dog in the fairy tale, the one whose eyes were large as saucers. And the guy shot in the forehead? He pulled out his pistol and blazed away at the guy who had shot him. He fell down, and the guy shot in the head ran up the stairs. It turned out he had been shot with a .38. The guy who shot him was some idiot who thought he was a hitman -- he had been hired to kill this guy, who was a really mean ex-con. I knew who he was, but have since forgot his name. It turned out what had happened is that the bullet hit the guy in the side of his head, entered his skull, circled around inside it, and came to rest on the other side! That's why he survived to blast the other guy -- who died at the hospital. When he was taken to the ER, my mother was there, since she worked there. She said the guy was hollaring, "I'm gonna die! I'm gonna die!" And he did -- too bad both of them didn't bump each other off. The guy who lived went back to the pen, since he was carrying a concealed weapon. In situations like that I found time slows down, almost even stops. Everything is imprinted on your memory forever. And you really do freeze. Diving out of the way! Hah! That's what you think! Maybe next time I might throw myself on the floor, but the first time, I just stood there frozen like an ice sculpture.
