Resistance See other Resistance Articles Title: 80-Year-Old Man Gives Assailant Fight 80-Year-Old Man Gives Assailant Fight A Dyersburg man is making a solid recovery from injuries he received during an assault at the V.A. Hospital in Memphis on Tuesday. 80-year-old George Younger, a WWII veteran lost his wallet, but probably saved his own life in warding off his attacker. When he was a 15-year-old teen in Memphis, George Younger more than toyed with the idea of taking up a career in boxing. Only a broken wrist kept him from competing in the golden gloves competition. But, while Younger didn't score a knock-out in his latest unexpected scuffle, he still came out a big winner because he stayed alive. 80-year old George Younger, of Dyersburg, doesn't need anybody's sympathy. “That policeman that was with me kept saying the victims with me right now. I said don't call me ‘victim,’” he told us. It's the WWII veteran's feisty nature and his combative skills gained as an amateur boxer which probably saved his life on Tuesday. But, his unlikely battle didn't take place in a squared ring. It dramatically unfolded as he went to wash his hands in a first floor bathroom at the V.A. hospital in Memphis. Seconds later he went toe to toe with an assailant, someone taller, stronger and at least 50 years his junior. Here's the blow-by-blow account. “ut of nowhere. Yeah, i didn't hear him. He didn't say give me your wallet. He didn't say one thing he just hit me. I really think he evidently hit people before... Knew he could knock them out or stun them,” he recounted. “I caught him on the right side. I shoulda got him on the left. I saw him sort of back-off. I didn't know i'd hurt him or not. And the it was a case of using all the strength i had for a much bigger man.” “He caught me again on this side pretty good. That really jarred me up good and when i tried to get up my knees buckled you know,” he continued. “He was choking me. That's when i realized it was getting serious. So, i hollered for help and he got up then.” All during the struggle, Younger's assailant attempted to pull him into one of the bathroom stalls while vowing not to hurt him anymore. Yet, wisely Younger resisted. “I don't know what i was thinking...other than i just....i knew i had to do what he didn't want me to do,” he said. Younger’s assailant, described as a male black in his 20's, escaped with the $200 in Younger's wallet. But luckily, he left without Younger's drivers license, V.A. card and his best credit card which all fell out of the wallet during the fight. Younger says his ordeal, including the 13 stitches needed to close up a wound on his hand, left him a little disillusioned. “I thought i was safe. The V.A. hospital with all those security guards around and other GI’s too that would take care if the could you know,” he said. But, the old competitiveness of the ex-welterweight slugger is still not far from the surface. “I hope his face is like that,” he smiled. Actually, Younger's battle for his life came on his second visit to the V.A. hospital that day. He'd originally come to get a new hearing aid, but came back to retrieve some lost photos he was going to take to a cousin.
