Title: John Diaz: Straight-talkin' presidential candidate Ron Paul (Interviewed by the San Francisco editorial board) [audio!]

Forget the "Straight Talk Express." Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, a Texas congressman, is the real deal when it comes to politics-be-damned bluntness.

During our editorial board's meeting with him today, he talked about how the Republican party has lost its way on issues such as individual liberties (he voted against the Patriot Act) and the U.S. role in the world (he voted against the resolution that led to the invasion of Iraq).

"I'm astounded that more people aren't upset" at the Bush administration's spying on Americans and other loss of civil liberties since 9/11, he said.

But before San Francisco "progressives" start flocking to the Paul campaign, they should know he also wants to repeal the income tax -- without offering a replacement revenue source -- opposes almost any restriction on gun ownership and is adamantly pro-life on abortion.

Ron Paul may be at 1 percent in the polls, but he's certainly the most candid candidate in either major-party field. Perhaps that's the advantage of not being able to afford high-priced handlers.
