Does anyone know the requirements to recall a Congressman? I know they tried to recall Joe McCarthy from the Senate and failed. I would like to know how many signatures we would need and as many of the details as possible. I need help as I have never done legal research online. I am ambitious and would like to recall about 400 of the congress critters but for now I would just like to know what it would take to get rid of just one of them. Thanks in advance.

Naaaahh...don't let personal doubt stand in the way of unbridled ambition...go for all 400...you can probably cull a decent 35 from the remainder of the House. Deal with the Senate later...don't take on more than you can handle. :-)

It varies by state, but essentially you have to get many thousands of valid signatures to get a recall motion on the ballot. Since it is rarely attempted, I don't recall specifics, but usually you have a very limited amount of time to gather those signatures. But, most states have a very limited set of charges you can level. Just not liking the guy won't do. There has to be some clear wrongdoing.

I found a website that gives the requirements state by state. In California you need to get signatures equal to 20% of the number of voters who voted for that office in the last election. In the Bay Area we have huge numbers who can work as volunteers and the person I want to recall is Nancy Pelosi so we will attract money, publicity and volunteers from everywhere. We also have 160 days from the day we file with the Secretary of State to tun in our petitions. We would have to craft messages to targeted groups, such as, gays, Republicans, Mexican-Americans, blacks, Asians, anti-war and anti-corruption voters. In SF any one of those groups can get you 20%. Of course that means that many people are in more than one voting group. One of my friends at work is a gay, Chinese Republican.
